Oh my Jesus fucking Christ. Pike is even better at lying to himself than Jim is. Ramble!POV, at least, betrays itself by protesting too much. Pike's POV cleanly omits. Hello, Christopher Pike, you have surprised me today.
I'm fairly sure that "unreliable narrator" is supposed to be an occasional narrative technique, not a way of life.
In related news, my Issues are showing.
In other related news, Winona is even more crafty and chaos-inducing than Jim.
Conclusion? The Lady!Pike/Winona is going swimmingly.
obligatory snippet, 284 words
Winona gets a speculative look in her eye. "Alright, then," she says. "Open up." She slaps his thigh, close to the hip and hard enough to sting.
"Excuse me?" says Chris.
Winona blinks at him innocently. "Oh, that didn't make you mad, did it?" she asks. "Because I was thinking, if you're going to act like I'm doing some terrible thing to you, I might as well be terrible and get some fun out of it, you know?"
"Get away from me," Chris says calmly.
"Don't be like that, sweetheart. Just lie back and think of England." Winona slaps him again and draws her hand back for a third but he surges up and knocks her flat to the mattress, her head hanging over the edge.
"Finally, we're getting somewhere," she says, breathlessly and utterly full of gratitude. "Do you want to hit me back? I'm totally fine with it if you want to hit me back. Just not in the face." She glances off to the side in a thinking-glance. "Wait, I can work with that, too."
"I'm not going to hit you in the face!" Chris snaps.
Actually, he yells.
Winona blinks, then shoots him a hopeful smile. "Flip me over and spank me like a naughty schoolgirl?"
Chris narrows his eyes. "I seriously doubt that would improve your behavior."
Winona's eyelids flutter shut for the briefest of seconds. "Growl at me like that again and I'll hit subspace in a heartbeat," she murmurs.
It occurs to Chris that anyone else would have kissed her by now, or nibbled along her collarbone, or pressed their face against the white curve of her neck.
"I don't know what that word means," he says.
