Summary: The ocean binds them all together.
“Sailing?”

“Yeah, DiNozzo. Sailing. You know how?”

“Yeah. It’s been awhile, but I remember the do and do nots. But why are we going sailing, Boss? I mean not that it’s a bad idea or anything, but I just don’t get it. You aren’t planning on dumping my body in the ocean to hide the evidence are you? I know I screwed up the other day, but that doesn’t warrant death. You could just fire me.”

“I’m not firing you, Tony.”

“Then why take me sailing?”

“Just taking a friend sailing. Any other questions?”

“Just one. When do we leave?”

The tumultuous waves of the ocean slapped against the boat which appeared insignificant in comparison to the massive body of water that it sat upon. There was a lone man aboard the tiny vessel. He had withdrawn from all around him. All that was left was the ocean and the wooden homage to the family he had lost so many years ago. No one knew of his loss. He turned his back on his responsibilities, his team, his friends, his family.

McGee ripped the page from his typewriter and fed it to his shredder. Tibbs would never leave his team.

Abby had always been aware of her body. She figured it had to do with growing up in a house where both parents were deaf. She learned body movements for communication before she learned how to talk. She learned how to make her body move smoothly like the waves of the ocean. She learned how to move fast, like when the waves crashed ashore. But now, as Gibbs held her close on the floor of the elevator, she shook like someone had just tossed a large stone on the surface. She had to trust Gibbs to smooth the surface again.

“Ocean, Mother,” Ducky said in a patient tone as he helped his mother from the car. “We are traveling across the ocean to see your brother.”

“My brother? Why he married that Italian whore! Why should I see him?”

Ducky sighed at the looks her outburst had caused. “His wife, Maria, was not a whore and she passed on several years ago. Remember how you taught her to make your famous apple scones?”

“I never would have given my prize recipe to an Italian, Donald. Now you go to bed and no dinner as your punishment.”

Ducky sighed. “Okay, Mother.”

“This is worse than when I was trapped in that box with Tony,” Ziva said as she continued to dip water out of the life raft. “And do not, how do they say, chuck up, in the raft, McGee.”

“It’s up chuck,” McGee said with a shaky voice before leaning back over the side again. “Are you sure there’s no Dramamine in the emergency kit?”

“If there were, I would have taken it myself. How far off course do you believe we are?”

“Shouldn’t be more than fifty miles, but in the ocean, fifty miles is a lot of ground.”

“You had GPS locators put in all of us? Without us knowing?!” Tony’s voice echoed through the metal walls of the carrier. “Didn’t you find that a little unethical?”

“Nope. And McGee and Ziva knew.”

“Wait, they knew you had us chipped and nobody told me about it?”

“Would you have said yes if I asked?”

“No.”

“Case closed. You got a lock on their position, Abby?” Gibbs asked over the satlink.

“About twenty miles west of your location,” Abby chirped. “How cool is it that McGee and Ziva get lost at sea and we can track them?”

“Abby knew?!”

She remembered the smell of the ocean. She was six years old when her parents took the family on a trip to the coast. After only knowing the smell of farmlands and the occasional ponds, the smell of the ocean was imprinted in her memory. After college, she knew two things; she wanted to make a difference and she wanted to live by the ocean. She reached her goal serving in the Presidential detail with the Secret Service. However, it was NCIS that fulfilled it. She died knowing that she had helped protect those that the ocean was bringing home.

Shannon sat on the sandy beach and let her fingers run through her daughter’s hair. She watched the waves crash ashore as she thought back on all the times she had been at that same beach with Jethro.

“When’s Daddy coming home?”

Shannon sighed as she wished yet again she could give a true answer. “I’m not sure Kel. He’s doing his job and he’ll be back as soon as he can. He can’t stay away for long.”

“Can I play Row, Row, Row Your Boat for the next tape?”

“I think he’d like that,” Shannon said with a smile.

He knew he was going to do it. He didn’t need the reports that Ziva had supplied him regarding Gibbs’ team to make the decision for him. If he had followed the reports, it would have been either Ms. Sciuto or DiNozzo in his scope. Instead, it was Caitlin. The women intrigued him, but she was the end to a mean: the breaking and eventual death of Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

He handed the bear with the homing beacon in it to the little girl and gave one last look at the ocean bringing the service men home. It was time.

Gibbs looked out at the crystal blue water as he ran his hand over his unshaven face. It had been one month since he had walked away from it all. One month spent patching up the shack that Franks called home. One month trying to fill the gaps.

He knew he shouldn’t have left the way he did, knew that he should have said more to everyone. But he had just walked away. And now it was too late for him to admit that he was wrong. Instead, he continued staring at the ocean for an answer that wouldn’t come.

“This reminds me of Ocean’s 11,” Tony said with a satisfied tone while McGee stifled a groan.

“Think about it,” he continued as he tapped a rhythm on the steering wheel. “We have Lt. Col. Greer who, right after his parole, has managed to orchestrate the theft of one million dollars from the General who was responsible for his court martial. And, left proof that the General has been involved in activities not becoming of a man of his rank. Plus he had help from ten of his former buddies. This is classic!”

“When does Ziva relieve me?” McGee mumbled.
