"Faith! Wake up, sweetie. You're having another nightmare."
The dark haired girl's eyes snapped open and she looked around in a fear-filled adrenaline rush that concerned Abby greatly. Once she was finished scanning the room for the remnants of her nightmare, Faith locked eyes with her sister.
"Was it the same?" Abby asked, as she sat down on the bed and wrapped an arm around the girl to pull her closer.
Faith just nodded and Abby was glad for once that their parents were deaf. While most would want their parents to help them through an obvious trauma, Faith preferred Abby be the one to comfort her and tell her that everything would be okay.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Abby didn't hold her breath. Faith had only opened up after the first nightmare. Each subsequent one had her withdrawing more and more.
"Just hold me," were the soft word and Abby complied. She didn't leave Faith's side, even after she drifted off into another unrestful sleep.
It was two days later that both Abby and Faith learned how real those nightmares could be as they walked home from the ice cream shop down the street. A woman stronger than any man Abby had ever seen grabbed her from behind and struggling did not stop her. When Abby managed to turn her face around, her own nightmares would be fueled for years to come by the ridged face and the fangs poking out of the ruby red lips.
Then the strong body that was holding her disappeared as if it was never causing Abby to collapse to the ground. When she looked up, her little sister stood there with piece of a tree branch clutched in her hands and a look of shock mixed with satisfaction on her face.
Before they could even speak to each other, a voice interrupted them. The voice was British and would forever change their lives.
Diana Dormer told both of them what Faith was and what she had to do. She also told Abby what would happen to their family if Faith remained with them. Abby was ready to fight the woman who was trying to take her sister away, but it was Faith that put a stop to her aggression.
"I gotta do this," she said in hushed tones. "I can't… I've seen them hurt you, hurt all of them in my nightmares. I can't let that happen."
"But who'll keep you safe?" Abby asked, pulling her sister close.
"Knowing you're safe will keep me safe. Trust me," and Abby did.
It was reported as a kidnapping. The injuries Abby had supported it and no suspect was ever found that matched the description she gave. The rest of the family mourned the loss of their daughter, praying that one day they would have closure. Abby didn't mourn, she prayed every day that Faith kept herself alive and saved others while doing it.
On the first anniversary of Faith's "kidnapping" Abby stepped into the tattoo parlor and let the process began for her tribute her sister. She didn't know if she would ever see Faith again, but if she did, Abby wouldn't need to say a word as to what that cross meant. Faith would understand.
