It is bitterly cold outside. I think the windchill is about -30*F, which is just brutal. I mean, yes, there was that year in junior high or high school when the actual temperature was -17* and the windchill -44* and I survived, but really? Once it's below zero, it's just cold. No way around it. Cheek-freezing, toe-numbing, hurts-to-breathe cold.

But from the Good News I Almost Forgot About files, it appears that my cell phone ticket is being dismissed! It's nice to know that California Highway Patrol officers do occasionally exhibit logical thinking and kindness. They could have just been jerks and let it stand as a warning to those who do use their cell phones while driving, but they believed me that I wasn't. And that's a nice Christmas gift. It'll be 60 days before I get my $93 back, but more than the money, I'm glad that justice prevailed. *g*

Let's see, what else? I saw a friend today I hadn't seen since high school. She's been in Korea and Germany and, most recently, Iraq, and it was just really nice to catch up. I hope we keep in touch; she was my Partner in Crime throughout much of my childhood, and the fact that we'd lost touch made me really sad. Also awesome, we picked right up where we'd left off, as if not a day had gone by since she left for Bemidji, Minnesota junior year. And she sort of gave me my George Bailey moment.

See, freshman year, my dad talked me into joining the track team. I, in turn, talked Connie into joining with me. The two of us, we were not cut out for running. Knowing we didn't really have the endurance for distance, we started as sprinters. It wasn't long before the two of us moved to discus, where we did a lot of running as training, but at least not for competition.

Fast forward several years to Connie joining the army. She told me tonight that the fact that she survived the track team for two years with me was the only reason she knew she could survive Basic Training. She knew she was capable of running, thanks, she said, to me. From our conversation today, it sounds as if she helped a lot of soldiers throughout her six years of service. So, y'know, I inadvertently might have had a hand in inspiring her to do good for others.

So, yay!

of the good, friends, home!
