After a hectic weekend spent running about finishing last minute errands and carefully packing luggage - rearranging boxes so as not to exceed the airline’s weight limit - we boarded a plane Monday afternoon and headed to California.
headlesspuppet had a few hours sleep Sunday night, but my brain was buzzing, going over the list of things to do, to bring and to see, so I stayed up. It didn’t take long for us to nod off on the plane, but sleep on an airplane isn’t very satisfying, and when we finally got to the hotel I was beyond dead, yet there comes a point where I’m so tired I can’t sleep. Also I was hungry. Very hungry. Thank god for delivery.
Awake for thirty hours and with a stomach full of pizza, you’d think I’d pass out soon as my head hit the pillow, but for whatever reason I had a hard time falling asleep. Once I did sleep, I woke frequently; one time I was too hot. Another time I was thirsty. Another time was for no reason. By 4am we were both wide awake and puttering around the room.
Here’s our hotel room.

It may not be right next to the convention center, but it’s a huge improvement from ’07. Due to having to accommodate some last minute decisions, in '07 we were a mile from the nearest train station and a ten-minute ride to the convention center. We also didn't have a couch or a desk back then. The train station is right next-door to us here and there are convenience stores -- while some build up a liquor stash, we have a
Coke stash -- a Rite Aid (useful), art store (also useful), numerous restaurants, and the waterfront all within walking/viewing distance. The train is a bit noisy, but I don’t mind. In ’07 there wasn’t much around our hotel but more hotels and a freeway. It was quieter, true, but also dull and lacking any character. We could have been in any old city judging by the scenery. I feel like we're moving up with each year.

It’s nice taking a walk along the waterfront during sunset.

The Star of India and another ship at the Maritime Museum.
Though we did go to other sites in ’07, we never spent time in downtown San Diego other than the convention center. We’d initially planned some sightseeing on the day we arrived, but things unfortunately fell apart back then.

One of the public art displays along the water is this giant kaleidoscope.
More updates to come. Twitter is also a good way to see what's happening as it is playing a significant role at the con this year. Last year I don't think nearly as many editors, publishers, artists and dealers did live Tweets.
