If you have a hobby you probably pay extra attention to artwork that features your hobby. For example, if you're into yoga and see a drawing of a character in a wanky pose you probably flinch. A dancer may frown when they see dancers drawn in a bad tango pose. If you knit and see the subject holding needles like they don't know what to do with them you may cringe. So it was with me when I saw a work featuring a violinist. Of course people can't know everything, and even what they are familiar with they may not really truly know. For example, though I grew up performing alongside the brass and woodwinds I don't really know the proper way to hold them. I know in general how one positions the hands and arms, but not in enough detail to draw it from memory. Thankfully we have the internet.
Not naming the artist, because that doesn't matter, and it's an otherwise good piece, but the positioning is wrong. It took me five minutes to find an acceptable example photographed from a similar angle, and that's why the above example bothers me so. The left hand I can forgive, for it's a resting position of sorts, but if she's in the middle of playing it's a problem; if you rest the heel of your palm like that there you cannot can move up and down the neck with the speed necessary. But the right hand is what really bugs me for she's holding the bow in her palm when it's supposed to be gripped by the fingers. I have no complaints about the violin itself though; it's got very nice detail and gradient of color, and the rest of the picture (not shown) is pretty. It's just the placement of that hand... it takes away from the work.
