Dear Yuletide Writer,
First of all, thank you for writing for me! You are surely The Best and I love you! Second of all, as this is my first time signing up for this - after a few years of hemming, hawing, and eventually giving up each time - I would like to apologize in advance if I have inadvertently given you horribly unhelpful prompts. I also apologize for this letter probably being a rambling mess that repeats a lot of my request form. (And if you work better without prompts, feel free to ignore my blathering completely.)
I guess I’ll start with some general likes and dislikes, though these sometimes change according to the fandom.
Characters are my big thing. While a well-constructed plot makes my heart go all aflutter, if character development is sacrificed in its place, my heart makes a sadface instead. I love good characterization and character interaction. I love mutual understandings and tentative friendships. I love deeply intense relationships - platonic, romantic, antagonistic, any combination of the above - where two characters understand each other in a way nobody else does. I like clever humor, and I like angst when it fits the tone of the show and isn’t overdone. I don’t usually like crossovers, but I enjoy mild AUs, more “what if X event happened differently” than “everybody’s in high school!” First person POV nearly always takes me out of a story, but I have a secret soft spot for second person. Third person is always trustworthy. I love a well turned phrase. I love literary and historical allusions. I love the humor inherent in characters being themselves, as well as the drama. I am a sucker for roadtrips, voluntary or on the lam. I don’t mind violence or explicit sex if they serve a purpose and will read any rating. I love an outsider’s perspective on characters and relationships.
Girl Genius:
Of course, I’m immediately going to negate my big point, because I am equally fascinated with plot in this fandom. Still love character development, though. I really enjoy guessing at the unsolved mysteries and hearing other people’s speculations in this fandom. I love that there are plot threads introduced in the first few pages that still haven’t been solved. I also love pretty much all the characters, though I’m a bit more attached to Agatha and company than the previous generations. Would not say no to some Klaus or Heterodyne Boys, though. I like the Agatha/Gil relationship, but would enjoy it mostly as a side pairing to a largely gen story. Zeetha is awesome, as are Higgs, the Jaegers, Krosp, Theo, Sleipnir, and Moloch.
Lackadaisy - Viktor, Ivy:
I will tell you a secret: I am a sucker for pairings like this, age difference and all. However, I am very aware that this squicks some people, so feel free to ignore I said that and write the most platonic thing you can manage. I just really love the relationship Viktor and Ivy have. I love when two people who should by all rights not be friends manage it anyway. I love when gruff, mean people have a soft spot for happy, chipper people who should logically be thorns in their sides, but they just can’t seem to hate.
Dollhouse - Topher/Claire:
This fandom is kind of my current obsession, so I will restrain myself from typing your ear off about it. I love this show for its complex characters, extremely gray morality, and the fact that probably the most hated character from episode one ended up as one of the most beloved characters by the time season two came to a close. But the thing I really fixated on was the Topher/Claire relationship. Pretty much everything I love about them can be summed up by that one scene in ‘Vows’. You know the one. There is hate, guilt, self-loathing, fixation, attraction, twisted affection. Do they have a history? What happens between ‘Getting Closer’ and ‘Epitaph One’? What part of Whiskey really shot Bennett? Can they ever come close to an understanding, or will there always be the desire for revenge? I would love anything about them. Dysfunctionality, co-dependency in the face of the apocalypse, slowly coming to forgive each other, going crazy as the world ends, exploration of Whiskey’s past. Or, you know, hatesex is always good. Or, like, if you wanted to write the season two we would have had if Amy Acker didn’t leave the show, that would be cool, too.
The Guild - Codex/Fawkes:
So, The Guild is one of those really silly shows that get kind of depressing if you think about it more. And Codex and Fawkes are both silly people that get kind of depressing if you think about them more. And I kind of love that clash of feelings. They are so horrifically awkward and uncomfortable, but in that trainwreck way that doesn’t quite trigger second-hand embarrassment. I would like anything with that same kind of awkward they have in canon, especially post-season four. Also, all the other guildies have that same silly/depressing thing, and guild antics are always enjoyable. I am all for the hilarity here.
So, yeah, I hope that helps somehow. I don’t have an info post, but I hardly ever f-lock anything, so feel free to click around my journal/fic journal/tags/memories/what have you.
Thank you again; you are lovely!
Sincerely,
Kay
