i've been in a real jamie bell type of mood lately. in english we read heart of darkness, and afterwards i decided i'd reward myself by watching king kong ("we could not understand because we were too far, and could not see because we were travelling in the night of first ages" and "we are accustomed to look upon the shackled form of a conquered monster, but there-- there you could look at a thing monstrous and free") and then flags of our fathers and now defiance.
i don't know how many times i can say this, but i love jamie bell. i think he's an amazing actor, and he's willing to take on unconventional roles (see hallam foe). and yes, of course i'm biased, but his performances are unforgettable. every single time i watch defiance, i'm moved to tears by his "nothing is impossible" speech. i'm moved to tears when i hear it in the trailer.
defiance has a lot of moments that i don't like. it's heavy handed at times, even cheesy. it's not totally historically accurate. zus's story seems a little hollow and could be better developed. he's just... angry, and at the end of the movie, although he comes back to defend his brothers, it feels a little like he hasn't changed at all.
but this movie is unbelievable. and part of it is due to the indescribable talent of jamie bell. this is an actor who can make background characters compelling and mysterious (jimmy, king kong), sidekicks funny enough to make buying a crappy movie worth it (griffin, jumper), and bit parts devastatingly sad enough to make me sob over a guy who probably had eight lines (iggy, flags of our fathers). i'm excited to see him move into larger parts and become more widely recognized, because that just might bring him closer to an oscar. not to mention that this is one of the few child stars who has managed to become successful.
yes, i'm biased because he is also incredibly gorgeous, and i've always been a sucker for a cute guy. but i like to think that i can recognize a superb actor when i see one, and this guy is at the top of the list.
