On Monday after work I went to get a few things.
Stop one: Staples
In Staples, a crazy woman. 40-50yrs., black, missing some teeth. Walking up and down the pencils and pens. She'd put her hands to her mouth and gasp with delight, "Oh my God!" and laugh when she saw something unusual, like a pencil sharpener shaped like a dog.
She saw me and sort of looked my way without directly addressing me. "Jamie, you have to understand, that he'll ALWAYS be your father, even though you didn't get along, you still owe him because if he wasn't your father, you wouldn't be you." She said this very earnestly and compassionately.
A girl goes walking by, she again, indirectly addressing her, laughing, "Oh I can't wait, we have such a great surprise in store for you, you're going to LOVE it!"
I had to leave or I very likely would have burst into tears. Stuff like that hits me. Was she coughing up things that really happened, memories of lost family, or is it more like something she saw on TV and she's having conversations and situations that she wants to exist, out of loneliness? I don't know and I don't want to think about it.

Went to Kohl's. On my way out, there was a guy walking out also in front of me, big black dude, big coat. He's looking over his shoulder. Sees me, looks like he's deciding something for a moment, then takes off his coat to reveal:
(dramatization; actual bookbag may differ from product image.)
Obviously stolen for a family member. Because he couldn't afford it? Because he spends his money on other less-important things? Because he can't hold down a job?
It was still a funny sight.
