I love days that are different than the routine, but without the drama. Today was one of those days. There was some minor drama with my kids in the morning, but it was mostly their drama, and not mine.
I started the day trying to figure out how I was going to show the inaugural events. The year before I came to my school they took out all of the TVs, there was one in each room. They have since been replaced by LCD projectors. The problem is that we can't play television on them. After some hunting I found a site that was streaming the events, but had a few hiccups. By the time the swearing it started there was major lag. The only solution was to watch the few choppy images and listen to NPR on the radio. There were two 6th grade classes and one 5th grade class in my room. The 6th graders were at least respectfully quiet (for the most part), but the 5th graders were impossible! I'm not looking forward to having them next year. After wards I chastised the 6th graders because explaining to them that we read about history in our books, but this is experiencing history. When they are asked where they were when Obama became president I told them they are going to have to reply with "I was in my 6th grade classroom sleeping, or thinking about recess, or not paying attention!" I explained to them the importance, especially of the Joseph Lowery and the civil rights movement. They sobered up a bit, and i realized my error of not having this talk before we began watching. I had assumed they already knew of it's importance.
Then my team was treated to lunch with the principal, yummy Chipotle. After lunch my co-teacher and I took turns to sneak away for free massages. They always have chiropractors come and give free massages at our school, but I never get a chance to go. It was a great massage that was about 15 minutes, but really seemed about 5.
Finally, an amazingly strange thing happened this evening. I was planning on going to yoga, but got busy watching something with Josh. I was trying to talk myself in going to the gym anyway to workout, but I had a bit of a belly ache. I had to run to the store anyway, so I thought I'd do a quick workout. The last couple of weeks I've only been able to do about a 20 minute cardio workout, and I expected the same today . . . but I couldn't stop. I ended up doing 45 minutes on the elliptical machine. That came to 3 miles, 350 calories, and at my target heart rate. I could have gone longer, but it was late and I needed to get home. I think it must've been the new pair of sneakers! I just need to keep that up :D
