An End to it All
Liara quietly opened the bedroom door. Shepard lay on the bed, her chest moving slowly with each labored breath. "I'm glad you're here," she said without opening her eyes.
"I didn't mean to disturb you."
"Nonsense," Shepard motioned for Liara to come sit beside her. "I don't know what I would have done without you these past few years. Since Garrus..." Her voice trailed off. "I couldn't have asked for a better friend." She put a thin hand on Liara's. "I'm sorry I never felt..."
"Shh. There is nothing to be sorry about. I'm not sorry about anything."
"I want you to have something." She paused to catch her breath. "If you want, you could..I know she would be special. Any daughter of yours would be."
"Marie, I couldn't."
"Please," She held the asari's hand a little tighter. "I've thought about this for a long time. This is my final gift. Take it and do with it what you will."
Liara nodded and bent close to Shepard until their foreheads were almost touching. She cradled her friends face, thumbs smoothing out the fine wrinkles on her pale cheeks.
---***---
Almost a century and a half had passed since she last joined with Shepard before the final Reaper assault. Liara could feel how tired she was now. She supported Shepard's weak frame as the galaxy stretched out before them.
"It's as beautiful as I remember."
Liara turned toward her old friend. Gone was the frail woman and in her place stood Commander Shepard. Her long white hair was replaced by the short dark hair from her time with the Alliance. Her grey eyes were bright again, reflecting the stars around them, though a hint of sadness remained. Liara held tighter to Shepard's arm and placed her head on the other woman's shoulder, just as she had all those years ago.
The calm silence was broken. "Merr? Is that you?"
The voice was unmistakable. Liara wasn't sure if the turian's voice came from a deep desire of Shepard's mind or if something was reaching out across time. She hoped it really was him.
"Garrus?" Shepard turned in confusion. "Where are you?"
"I'm here." His voice seemed to come from all around them.
She released Shepard's arm and smiled at her. "Go to him." Liara watched Shepard walk into the bright center of the galaxy until she was small shadow bathed in light.
---***----
Liara opened her eyes. Shepard struggled to breathe but her face was calm. Liara kissed her forehead. "Good-bye Marie. I love you."
Shepard gasped one last time then was still. Liara tucked a strand of silver hair behind her ear. "Have a drink for me."
