Title: Epilogue
Word Count: 306
Characters: Varric with mention of F!Hawke/Fenris
Summary: When Varric tells the Seeker he doesn't know where Hawke is, he's mostly telling the truth. To be on the safe side, assume vague end game spoilers.
A/N: My snarky rogue Hawke was BFFs with Varric and I just can't believe that she would totally leave him. This was the one of the first things that popped into my head after I finished the game.
Epilogue
“Just tell me one thing: the Champion, is she dead?”
“Oh, I doubt that.”

Varric listened as the footfalls of the Seeker’s troops grew more distant. From the library he looked down on the courtyard, it was empty.
He pulled the out folded piece of paper that a messenger had given him earlier and examined it by the light of the fire. It looked like a merchant receipt: barrels of flour, a few bolts of fabric, and seeds for crops. He turned it over; there was a drawing and some numbers on the back, a quickly sketched design for a table. However, it was the fine lettering at the bottom that caught his eye.
“The queasy crow flies at midnight,” followed by an elaborate ‘H’. He smiled; she always did like that line.
So Hawke was still alive. Not that he had been overly concerned, but it had been a while since her last message. Beneath her note “Valemus” was written in a cruder hand. A small symbol resembling a feather was drawn next to it. Broody’s writing was getting better.
Varric examined the receipt again. There was nothing to give any hint of where it had come from, just the names of the buyer and seller. Hawke was careful to never give too much away. He could probably piece enough details together to track her down but there was no reason to. He was content to know she was still out there.
He spent a few minutes committing every detail, no matter how seemingly insignificant, to memory. He fondly rubbed his fingers along the text at the bottom. “I miss you Buttercup,” he sighed, “Things just aren’t the same here without you.”
He let the note fall down into the fire and went to his room, not bothering to watch the flames turn the paper to ash.
Author's footnote: Since deciphering in game languages isn't my strong point I'm working on Tevinter=Latin. Of course that one semester of Latin 10 years ago hasn't really stuck around. Sumus tutus should mean "We are safe/well/healthy", just Fenris' little way of say that all is well. Thanks to
browniecakemix for letting me know the correct verb would be valemus.
