Linux Mint 9 "Isadora" has been released, in record time =D
This is a Long-Term Support release, ideal for installations where you want long-lasting stability and don't want to upgrade a lot. Not that you can't, you certainly can, but if you want a "set it and mostly forget it" system, the LTS releases are the way to go - regular updates are provided for the next three years. If you were considering Linux Mint as an alternative, this is a great release to get your feet wet. I've been very impressed with the stability of the Release Candidate, and feel confident recommending Isadora to the Linux-curious.
As always, I strongly suggest running off of the liveCD or liveUSB for a day or three, to make sure that all of your hardware works and that you feel comfortable in the Linux environment. And as always, I will happily assist anyone who wants to test the waters, with acquiring a Mint 9 ISO and burning a liveCD or making a liveUSB. If you wish to install, back up all of your data to external media (such as an external hard drive), because installation involves formatting your hard drive, which will wipe out all data on it irretrievably. Back up, back up, back up again, and when you're completely certain you've got everything, back it up again *LOL* Nah but really, better safe than sorry. If you do choose to install, contact me and I will walk you through creating a partition scheme that will keep your data safe and improve system performance. The default partitioning scheme used by Mint's installer is good, but not best.
Enjoy looking at the pretty Mint ^_^
