Wanky, self-referential birthday post

Jul 02, 2010 17:33

I'm a year older! This may change, but I still love birthdays. As of now I'm not freaking out - many would say that's because I don't have any reason to freak out, given that I'm not really pushing any huge age walls. but still. Birthdays to me = still a lot of fun. Cake and presents. Honestly, how can that be bad?

So

3 years ago today: I was still new to Melbourne, hadn't met any of the awesome Nano crew who would become some of my closest friends, was feeling insecure and unsure, but was pretty sure I loved Melbourne more than any other place I'd been in Australia.

2 years ago today: I was introducing K to my family (huge - given I'd never introduced anyone to my family before) though I wasn't sure I wanted to. I was also introducing him to my friends, who had only ever known single me, so I wasn't sure how having a +1 was going to work. But I wasn't overly concerned, as I was busy waiting for our relationship to dissolve, as all my relationships had done before hand. I was planning a laser tag birthday party (which was awesome), working at Hinkler, and feeling pretty good.

1 year ago today: I was engaged, freaked out about the wedding, freaked out about work, freaked out about my family, freaked out about K's family, and also dealing with the fact that K's shift work was making him zombie-like, and worrying our relationship was going to start suffering because of it. I was happy occasionally, but mostly stressed adn crazed, and this could shift in 30 second intervals.

today: I'm married, pregnant, K's overseas for work, but I'm dealing. Work is really good. I've got some friends to go out for dinner with. I'm working on work stuff, but also a couple of freelance jobs that bring in extra cash, and keep my profile up in an industry I'm interested in. I'm pretty confident and content. Content is normal for me - confident? Well that one's kinda new.

Celebrations thus far:
Chocolate peanut butter cake - made for myself as a treat, but shared with lots of people so as to minimise negative effects
Presents from my family, with orders to open one every hour on the hour, so as to make the day last longer:
  • Star Trek DVD 2 disc special edition with Spock on the front!!
  • PJs & slippers
  • perfume
  • Cookbook
  • scarf
Presents from K, opened before he left so he could see my expression
Celebrations to come:
Tapas and cocktails (mocktails in my case) at a wine lounge/cocktail bar in downtown Canberra. Booking the massage my sister-in-law gave me. Relaxing, and waiting another year till it happens all over again :)
