An alternative to all this pink

I'm not Valentine's Day's biggest fan. Indeed, it's a celebration that I quite frankly boycott every year - thankfully with the blessing of Himself. It used to be because of all the hype, but now it's more about the hype, the laziness of having only one day where you make an effort - how much more romantic if it were spontaneous, and the waste. Why anyone would want a bear clutching a plush love-heart inscribed with 'Happy Valentine's Day' is beyond me. I do rather like Cheap Flowers Day (February 15th) but anyway.

But instead of grumbling I'm going to try something a little different this year. After all, it's good to remember things that we love about life. So here is my list (it's me, so of course it's going to be a list) of things that I would send a Valentines to, if I sent Valentines, because I love them.
  • Pret a Manger salmon sandwiches, hot wraps and cheaper than Starbucks coffee. Also their friendly staff and poppyseed pretzels.
  • Marks and Spencer's £1.05 instant porridge. Not as cheap as having it at home, but superbly warming stuff.
  • The staircase up to my office. It is very marble, very brass, very stained glass window and very grand. I believe that buildings do make a difference in how we feel, and even though I have a very boring job, I enjoy working in such a beautiful building.
  • That recipe I found for cookie dough truffles (!!!) I have a feeling that when I get round to making it, it will make a lot of people happy.
  • Hot showers at the gym. Nothing takes away an exercise related ache like one, the water pressure is always good and the water is always hot. And I don't have to wipe it down after me.
  • Walking the dog on starry nights and chanting to myself "The countless stars of heaven's field/ Were mirrored in his silver shield."
  • The pike_numberone comm.
  • Coming into Glasgow Central Station on the train, because it is made of impressive ironwork and win.
  • Being able to see Ben Lomond and the Arrochar alps clad in snow in the distance from the train to work.
You are of course welcome to steal this idea if you like.
