Wings of Wrath: First Impression

I just finished Wings of Wrath, the second book in the Magister Trilogy by CS Friedman. I'm not sure what to think.

Sometimes, when a story removes primary focus from one character to bring others into view, it's a kaleidoscopic shattering that creates a multi-faceted picture with depth and detail. Sometimes it's just a headache.

I think the third book will determine whether the movement away from original character and concerns is a masterful Picasso or a piece of fridge art.

At the end of the book, it felt like I was supposed to be swept up in great events or maybe concerned or sympathetic for the precarious position of the first and only female magister. It's like a guessing game. I think my duty as a conscientious human being is to feel loss for the dead and conflicted over the various characters' difficult choices, but I need to check the answer sheet first before I'm sure. Without more depth and explanation for the characters, the second book is as engaging as walking down the street and overhearing a hobo's mutterings. You can do it, and it might be interesting if you stuck around long enough, but really, why bother?
