30 Days of Female Awesome, Day Eighteen: Favorite non-warrior female character
This one caused me significant trouble. What does non-warrior even mean? Someone who doesn't run around with weapons? In that case, it would include the vast majority of female characters ever written (though you wouldn't believe it from fandom, sometimes), several of whom I've already mentioned.
I had "Maxine Grey?" jotted down in my notes, and as much as I love her, it doesn't feel right, because even without weapons, she's a warrior if ever there was one.
So what I need, then, if the distinction is to be meaningful, is a thoroughly peaceful character. One without a driving cause, possibly a nurturer, but not a mama bear.
And... well, the thing is, those characters tend to either be drips, or they veer into this serene piety that's really hard to like.
Eventually, though, a name presented itself, and once it did, it was impossible to imagine anyone else.
Death of the Endless, from Sandman
Death doesn't fight. She has nothing to fight; everyone will belong to her, in the end. Her life started when the first thing died, and she will continue to live until the last thing has. She has seen all of humanity, and all of other life forms as well.
And, by and large, she likes them. She's the most remote from humanity's wills and desires, and spends no time squabbling over lesser lifeforms the way her siblings do. But at the same time, she's the one closest to people.
She quotes Mary Poppins and throws a loaf of bread at her brother. She prefers The Little Mermaid to Beauty and the Beast, and thinks it's perfectly all right that they changed the ending - she likes happy endings. She has met every king and emperor in the world, and her favourite is Norton I of the USA.
Others have said this, but it's still true: If she were the one to meet me after death, I wouldn't be so afraid of dying.

Day Twenty-Nine: A female-centric fic rec
