I've discovered that Ulf Stark's delightful Dårfinkar & Dönickar is now available in English from amazon.co.uk, as well as amazon.com marketplace, under the title Fruitloops and Dipsticks.
GET THEE TO THIS BOOK AND READ IT.
It is the story of Simone, a 12-year-old girl who is living fairly happily with her bohemic mother and big white dog, until several complications arise:
#1: Said mother falls in love with a dipstick,
#2: so they have to move to another town,
#3 which causes Mom to promptly forget Simone's birthday,
#4 and the dog.
#5 Once in the new house, Granddad appears, declaring that he has escaped from the hospital and intents to stay until he dies.
#6 Because of all this, Simone is a day late for her new school,
#7 and too flustered to correct the teacher when she welcomes "the new boy, Simon." Simone figures instead that the easiest thing is to just go with it.
#8 BOY IS SHE EVER WRONG.
There's a lot to love about this book - the gender-bending, of course (with resulting love triangle), but also the bizarre, farcical plotting and the warm, forgiving view the book has of its characters.
I will admit that part of my love is due to the 1989 TV miniseries, which I started to fansub once upon a time and never got around to finishing. It might be time to do so now... Anyway, meanwhile, read the book! It is highly enjoyable.
