30 days of female awesome, Day Twelve: Favorite female character in a movie

Rose Sayer from The African Queen

You know, I do have to wonder if a film like The African Queen could be made these days. By which I don't mean the colonialism and exoticism - unfortunately, that stuff's still around. I mean, would Hollywood consider making an expensive adventure movie in which the leading lady is a middle-aged, God-fearing spinster with stern ideals who shows very little cleavage?

Even if they did, I doubt she'd be as awesome as Rose. Because let's face it, you don't get a lot of Katharine Hepburns in the world, and Rose is Katharine Hepburn at the top of her game. She's Hailee Steinfeld in True Grit crossed with Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada, Maggie Smith in Sister Act, and Princess Leia. She comes off, at first sight (at least for people who don't know Hepburn) as a very boring, uptight person with a small world and a lack of imagination, yet she turns out to be someone who'll go, "Hey, let's load our boat with torpedoes and run it into a German vessel."

Like most of my favourite characters, Rose is ever so much more than meets the eye. She's tremendously interesting, great fun to watch, and - dare I have the hubris to say it - very relatable to a mousy person like me.
