doing what I should have done with the DVD, i.e. asking for HELP!

My mom offered to take the DVD player, and as I told her, I can't guarantee that it'll work with their old TV, but mine is worse than theirs and the store lady didn't say it would be a problem, so it might. OTOH, my trust in that store lady is not high right now. Does anyone know if there's a problem mixing new DVD/Blu-Ray players with old TVs? (Apart from the high picture quality being completely unnecessary, I mean.)

More importantly, can anyone give me a tip on what DVD player I should buy instead? I've checked for cheap multiregion ones, which don't seem very reliable, and cheap high-quality ones, which don't seem very easy to fix regionwise, and now my head is spinning. Basically, I need something that'll play all my bought DVDs (it doesn't necessarily have to play my burned ones), and which will work with my old TV as well as a new one (if I some day buy a new one). Multiregion or easy hack is a must, preferably it should be sturdy enough that I won't have to throw it out in a year, and everything else is voluntary.

Any tips? Please?
