Day 23 - Most annoying character
Lauren Gray, Judging Amy
My first thought upon seeing this day's theme was to pick my classical hate-choice of Lonnie Henderson on SeaQuest, but truth be told, I barely remember her anymore.
love2loveher gave some hints that made me believe she wanted me to pick one of the horrendous guest characters played by John Christian Graas, and they are indeed appalling. Indeed, I would say that he's the worst child actor imaginable, and that's saying a lot. But even so, they were guest characters. Look the other way for fifty minutes, forget they ever existed, and get on with the show. (Admittedly hard with Young Riders ep "The Littlest Cowboy", which is remarkably complex and interesting for a YR ep - that is to say, not very, but some - for the parts of it that don't include JCG.)
Still, I feel that to properly be worthy of this day, it has to be a regular. Hence Lauren.
She is abysmal, even with the low standards set on child actors. She's also in every blasted episode, enforcing her cutesy brattiness on otherwise interesting episodes. And that's the thing - JA is, all in all, a very likeable show. Granted, I mostly watch it for Maxine (Amy's mother), with a side of Bruce (Amy's court service officer), but they're backed up by some pretty decent characters. Amy's quite fun to watch in her courtroom scenes, and Maxine's social worker scenes are usually ace, with Sean providing a nice straight man for her. (Timothy Omundson, for the Psych fans among you.)
The family scenes are noticeably less fun, and a large reason for this is that either Lauren is in the scene, or I have reason to suspect she will be. And she really does represent the worst of child acting. She's cutesy. She's precocious. She shows no particular personality and will be whatever the plot needs her to be (including various acts of rebellion when the writers deem that it's time for one). She has that incredibly grating voice, and maybe it's mean of me to hate a person's voice, but I can't help it - I hate it with a passion.
Of all the show's good scenes, and there are many, I can't think of a single one involving Lauren. Any other character, yes, even the ones I don't particularly care for (like Peter). But Lauren is a big ball of suck from beginning to end, pulling everyone else down to her level as well.
I should yell "DIE BRAT DIE" at little girls. But sometimes it's really hard to stop myself.
