Day 16 - Your guilty pleasure show

I've already admitted to some quite bad shows in this meme, most of them childhood sins. I can't claim to be ashamed of any of the shows I'm currently watching, though there is one I can't mention without also defending my interest, so I guess I'll choose that one:

Britain's Got Talent

The judges of BGT often remind the viewers that "this is a variety show." Which it is, and that's why it's so much more engaging than all other reality shows I've watched. Because, sure, it has snarky judges. It has adorable BFF hosts that for obvious reasons have people comparing them to Merry and Pippin. (Dec's Pippin, and he's MINE.) But when you get right down to it, the awesome thing about Britain's Got Talent is that anything can happen.

It's been called a freak show, and of course it is, but that's the brilliancy of it. All the freaks are there voluntarily, and freakish because of what they do, not what they are. If you fart the Vienna waltz, or have a knife-throwing act without being able to throw knifes, you can't very well complain when people laugh. (There's the issue of some auditioners possibly being insane, plus the whole having children in the competition thing, but... okay, can we just skip the justifications? Basically, it all comes down to "I don't care because it's SO AWESOME" anyway.)

In the various Idol shows, you know that people are going to sing, well or badly. In America's Next Top Model, though the aspiring models dress up as weeeeird things, after a season or two you feel like you've seen it all. (N.B. that this isn't a slam on either show - I deliberately chose the ones that did capture my interest at least a little.)

In Britain's Got Talent... well, it might be "dancing" ferrets:

Or it might be gymnasts defying the laws of physics:

You just don't know. Even in the finale, you're not quite sure what will happen, just that every act will be different from the one preceeding it. Totally. Fricking. Awesome.

I could add clips all night (I have a bunch on my youtube favourites list and even more favourites who have not yet been added), but really, just follow links around on youtube and choose your own favourites. :-) Though I do recommend Gregg Pritchard for the OMGWTFYAY factor.

Btw, while looking up Lois & Clark clips to get
nam_jai hooked, I came upon one where he says "I have to verbalize my emotions." My reaction was pretty much, "Verbalize your emotions? Clark, no wonder I find you a near-perfect man! You're a fricking GIRL!" (I know, I know, I'm being sexist... but I can't help myself. *g*)
