my internet connection sucks

You know, it feels like all I ever do on this place is beg for help on various issues. Now it's my internet connection. It stops working every evening and has done so for the past ten days or so. At first it was just an hour or so at a time, and not necessarily every night, but now it lasts much longer - yesterday I came home at six thirty, found that the connection wasn't working, and kept the computer on. Just as I was about to go to bed at eleven thirty, it started working again.

As you can imagine, this is massively annoying, and I have no idea what the problem is. I called my provider Friday evening, they had no idea what the problem was either but took my number to get back to me. (They haven't.) I've tried all the obvious things: restarting, turning firewalls off and on, pulling out cords and putting them back in, renewing IP, running the virus scan... (It found two spyware, but no viruses.)

I've wondered if perhaps there's something wrong with the computer itself, but if so, shouldn't the internet stop working entirely, or at least at more irregular intervals? It's still fine in the mornings. Last night I put a note up, asking the neighbours if they've had any trouble. (But again, if the actual physical broadband was the problem, shouldn't it be more irregular?)

I'm a librarian, not a computer expert - I can play with the thing just fine, but only as long as it works. I know some of you guys have more expertise. What on earth could the problem be?
