I first saw a mention of this on fjm's LJ, though I've since read the writeups in sf_drama and stupid_free too.
Madonna, during a concert in Romania, mentions local discrimination against gay people and Romani, and how wrong that is. Part of the crowd boos.
The ONDT post on the subject quickly fills with examples of antiziganism so vile it's sickening. One example, which is thankfully so idiotic it's almost funny, discusses funeral habits: "imagine a 8 ft deep grave 10 ft wide with their entire bedroom in it. im talking t.v.s beds rugs jewlery everything. then after its all buried fellow gypsies go and steal from the buried person."
It's not just one person either - there are several examples of people trying to "explain" why gypsies are trash, with several more going, "Gypsies are real? I didn't know that! LOL!" (Which, ignorance isn't assholish. Coquetting with your ignorance is.)
I wish I could believe it was just internet trolls, but I've heard similar shit dressed up pretty by adults. These are the people to have in the back of your minds when you see the gypsy thieves and witches in movies.
So, you know, fuck ficcing, vidding, and the Dårfinkar och Dönickar fansub. Clearly I need to get around to fansubbing Katitzi, to at lest try to offer an alternative.
