I was reading the news on
Robin Hood's Merry Men and noticed that one of the ER prettyboys is joining as Will Scarlet. Which made me wonder what's up with the Will Scarlet as resident hottie trend, if it started with Christian Slater or happened before that. I mean, I love Ray Winstone to pieces, but resident hottie he's not.
(Actually, I'm not sure "trend" is even the word for it, since the only other real claim on it is Will Scarlet O'Hara, who went on to be a Robin Hood of his own in a series without any Will Scarlet at all. The new Robin Hood series is such a boyband thing it's hard to tell - sure, Harry Lloyd is easy on the eyes when he's not playing a raving alien psychopath, but enough to name him resident hottie in that crowd? Hmmm...)
I started thinking about older versions. Like Howard Pyle. Was Will Scarlet... and then I remembered what Will Scarlet was like in the Howard Pyle novel. :-D :-D :-D
For those of you who haven't read it, that Will Scarlet is INCREDIBLY FEY. His introduction is pretty much "Oh la la, let me smell this lovely rose and ruffle my long blond curls and flutter my eyelashes, and pardon me sir while I uproot this young tree and proceed to beat you senseless with it." He's Queer Eye with an added can of whoopass. (Go to
the Robin Hood file at Project Gutenberg and search for "Robin Hood and Will Scarlet", and you'll see for yourselves.)
I have yet to see THAT Will Scarlet at the silver screen, but it would be pretty amazing to do so. Not, of course, if they turned him into a caricature, but the right mix of fey and badass would be just awesome. :-)

The combination of the previously mentioned CoC Yenta meme and having Cyndee Peters singing made me realize how predominantly white my vid is at this stage of planning/editing. Several of the great women of colour I know turned out to be younger than I thought: Debbie Allen in Fame, Whitney Houston in Cinderella, Queen Latifah in Hairspray (and of course she was even younger in Chicago). I've allowed the occasional year under forty, but if I go down further I feel that the message is lost. And I'm not sure what to do about it, because I can't seek out a bunch of new fandoms just to make the vid.
I have thought of Chrissie in Press Gang, some Almodovar women, Mulán's grandmother, Whoopie Goldberg in Cinderella (hey, I downloaded it and love it, I'm gonna use it for SOMETHING), possibly Marla in Boston Public, Roxy in DLM, Lou in Jake 2.0, Gus's mom in Psych OR Claire Huxtable but not both, Wilhelmina Slater, and maybe Fatima of Little Mosque. Even if I find a place for all of them, it's not a lot considering the number of women I have total.
So, keeping in mind that I'm not going chasing new fandoms (remember, I have three lining up from the Yenta meme itself), is there someone I have forgotten?
