Katta plays the part of crafty aunt

Jan 03, 2009 09:22

The entire family (apart from my brother's gf, who was working) were here Monday, and I had put the few available toys in the livingroom to entertain the nephews. They were indeed entertained, and M. must have picked up on the fact that some of the Sindy clothes were home-sewn, because he asked, "Will you sew a mermaid tail for my Barbie?"

Um, eep? I had never sewn a mermaid tail in my life. M. explained that he wanted the Little Mermaid doll and the Barbie doll to be sisters. Well, how could I resist that?

To make things a little bit harder still, he took home both the dolls and the original mermaid tail. I therefore had to use my own Sindy dolls as models, and make the tail from memory, which is the reason the proportions are a bit off and the waist not quite finished - we'll put in a button or piece of Velcro to fit.

Yes. I made it. And to be able to finish the tail before my sister's boys travelled back home, I even got reaquainted with my sewing machine. It was unusually well-behaved, and I only had to make the finishing touches by hand.

End result behind cut:

M. and A. played with the mermaid sisters a lot once I was finished. (Thus upsetting poor J. who has some difficulty being let into their games. It's not easy being younger.) Sis tried to find out if A. liked the games well enough to want a Barbie of his own, and he said, "I'd like a boy Barbie... who's a mermaid." *g* Seems like I could have work aplenty if I tried.

I am quite pleased to be the crafty aunt, though. It's certainly not a role I ever imagined for myself, but why not? I've knitted baby G. a teddybear, after all, and I think there are some other knitted toys in their toy boxes I've made too. Since I don't like to play as much as my brother does, this could be a way to still make myself useful.
