beauty in the eye of the beholder and all that

A tip from ninth_wonders sent me to the AfterElton hot 100 list. While many favourite faces were on the list (Taye Diggs in the top 5, John Barrowman at 10, both Supernatural boys and four of the Heroes boys further down the list), there were also a lot that made me go "yeah, not so much."

Moving on to the AfterEllen hot 100 on the other hand, made me much ( Read more... )

I had basically the same reaction (aside from the Maxim list, which I haven't looked at yet). I think with the men it was that most of them somehow look alike - all sculpted and chiselled and perfectly tanned and smooth. I guess I go more for thin, quirky types.

Thin and quirky is good. I tend to like them femme but dishevelled, though my taste sort of varies a bit. So this list was a tad too manly and clean for me.

Yes, exactly. I think their "manliest" guy I still like would be Hugh Jackman (not on that picture though. That makes him look vaguely like George Michael circa Faith, and that's not really something that suits him.), but in general I would go more in the direction of... David Tennant? And with some, it's really the pictures - see John Rhys-Myers, hairstyle of. Usually, he is quite good-looking, but that?

I also think that at least the After Ellen women are a little more diverse in general. (Although the appeal of Ms. Lohan seriously escapes me)

It definitely would, I know a lot of women who like the muscle men, but I don't *think* they're as "bad" as the gay men when it comes to the Adonis-men.

Pretty much, yeah. Like there are some sort of "official" aesthetics. In that respect, it would be very interesting to see a straight female version of the guys' list, to determine if that's just a current mainstream masculine body ideal, or if it is really a preference of gay men.

I have to go hunting for a list like that, it's clear. There's got to be several.
