beauty in the eye of the beholder and all that

A tip from ninth_wonders sent me to the AfterElton hot 100 list. While many favourite faces were on the list (Taye Diggs in the top 5, John Barrowman at 10, both Supernatural boys and four of the Heroes boys further down the list), there were also a lot that made me go "yeah, not so much."

Moving on to the AfterEllen hot 100 on the other hand, made me much more satisfied. Yes, there were plenty of my favourites missing, but I wouldn't expect anything else. Of those on, several I had never heard of, but I could see why they were chosen. I think Jordana Brewster at number 9 was the first one on the list that had me go, "pretty, sure, but not on a top list." The Elton list had me saying that all the time. Even though the average number of favourites wasn't so different, my opinion of my non-favourites very much was.

I wonder if it is because men are photographed differently from women (fewer closeups = harder to tell how pretty they are), or because I've been watching so many lesbian love stories (I suspect Clea DuVall made the list because many, like me, fell in love with her in But I'm a Cheerleader), or if I really am that pathetically stereotypical. Then again, if I had the taste of a gay man, I should probably be worried.

And if I had the taste of a straight man, clearly I should be very worried, because Maxim's hot 100... not so much. (I can count to six women who'd be anywhere near my top 100. The AfterEllen list beats that in their top 20, and that's not even counting the women I didn't previously know the names of.)

Now all I need is a straight woman's list for comparison. Does anyone know where I can find one?
