This stuff is driving me mad...

I was checking out American dress sizes for a story and found this site. Translating the clothes I usually wear into US standards, it claimed I was a size four (or possibly a size six). But the few American pieces of clothing I've worn have been size 7/8 ( Read more... )

If you were looking at something specific to dress sizes, it may be very off because dress sizes, at least when it comes to formal dresses such as for weddings and evening wear, people usually wear 2-3 sizes larger than usual (considering size increments by 2's) so you might be a size 8, but your dress size might be 12. Its silly, and i think it is to make all women feel really fat as they get ready for a fancy evening, but for some reason it is that way according to my friend that used to work in the bridal shop.

That's so incredibly bizarre. As if there aren't better times to feel fat than on your wedding day.

But still, my formal dress is a size 8, no bigger... but of course, it could be a UK size 8, and they could be more reasonable.

Actually, from what I've heard, US clothing sizes are frequently one or two steps *lower* than the corresponding UK or Australian ones (as in, a US 6 is a UK 8, or something), apparently for the sake of flattery or something -- though I have no idea what's up with changing that for formal dresses, and don't remember it from my formal-shopping. Go figure.

But then, clothing sizes are also pretty erratic from brand to brand and so on, so who knows....

Or I could be completely wrong.

when it comes to regular clothes, that seem sto be the case. And nicer clothes (generaly high priced brands) tend to be bigger in smaller sizes, so if you usually wear an 16, you might fit into a 14. but that usually applies to things like blue jeans. The only thing where I have heard abotu teh drastic difference where you need a size 1-2 above usual is in formal dresses.
