lets see.. things to check out: driver for the wireless card: does it need updating? find out wich type/brand it is, and look on that brands website (( or do it my way, just type inthe brand of wirelss card and driver into google.. ))
just in case, do check for viruses etc. there are a few online scanners you can use for a second opinion to check if your scanner has been doing its work. ((if you are not sure wich online scanner to use, go with one of the familair names, like mcafee, norton, etc. ))
Although viruses tend to be more brutal on your connection, I would still check for them as engelina suggested just in case.
But for me this is sounding like the wirless connection card in her laptop. It is possible that it is just plain and simply failing, passing on, going to meet it's maker, joining the choir invisible... okay I'll shut up :-D,
I'm thinking this is the more likely reason because your mom has no problem with the internet when directly connected to the router.
And your sister should check on her technology information again. EVERYTHING wears out eventually and some do it quicker than others. Given it's rare that a wireless card wears out, but that does not mean it doesn't happen.
