Question for the techno savvy....

So, I'm sure I have other people who know computers well on my friends list. I have a question:

Both my mom and myself use laptops, and thus use internet wirelessly in our house. My laptop, the one I'm on even, has had little to no issues at all with staying connected. My moms laptop however is a different story. While it'll find a connection and keep it for a while, it eventually loses it. Whether it's turned off or not. However, when it's hard wired to the router, it gets a connection just fine.

My sister and her computer guy husband think it might be a virus. But wouldn't a virus block ANY connection, even a hard wire one, if it was blocking a connection?

I think it's got something to do with the wireless card, or the antenna in the laptop that gets a wireless signal. My sister disputes this saying that wireless cards don't wear out.

My mom's laptop is a Gateway. About 5 or 6 years old(she either got it in 05 or 06, I can't remember). It runs a little slow like all aging computers, but otherwise it's fine. In fact my sister's husband did a whole over haul/cleaning of the system like a few months ago. It's not had any issues with wireless connections in the past. Either at home, or on vacation, it always got a signal, no problem. This is only the recent couple of years.

So TL;DR, what could be keeping it from getting a wireless connection? Is it a virus? Is it the wireless card/antenna, or is it something else?
