Episode summary:
Kyuubei, Tsukuyo and Sacchan try to convince Kintoki that Gin-san is not a bad guy. However, Kintoki doesn’t listen to them and orders them to leave Kabuki town. He expects Madao and Katsura to help him, but they go against his wishes.
Kintoki: ‘Get out of this town with Gintoki.’
Katsura & Madao: ‘In that case, we also have our answer.’
Kintoki: ‘What do you think you’re doing? Women are quick to betray you, but men are supposed to have honour. Aren’t we frien-’
Madao: ‘No doubt about it.’
Gintoki (in the flashback): ‘If you ever change, I’ll be there to cut you down.’
Madao: ‘Kin-san, a buddy of mine used to smack me around.’
Gintoki (in the flashback): ‘ Fool! Don’t blame everything on your sunglasses!’
Madao: ‘That’s who we are.’
Madao: ‘But if you’re taking the wrong path, we’ll stop you, even if it turns the whole world against us.’
The touching scene, however, reminds Gintoki of something else:
Gintoki: ‘Y-you guys are...
Gintoki: ‘...acting all friendly and mature at our class reunion as though you never shunned me when we were kids.’
Gintoki’s remark is not taken kindly.
But Kintoki manages to brainwash most people so that they side with him. He orders everyone to attack. However, his brainwashing doesn’t work on Gintoki’s closest friends!
Katsura: ‘Go ahead and try! But we hold inside us ironclad memories of the battles we fought together!’
Katsura: ‘A silver sword lies inside our souls!’
Gintoki: ‘If you think you can break those swords, break them!’
An epic battle begins - Gintoki will take care of the main character imposter, while everyone else will protect his back.
While everyone is fighting, Kintoki explains that it was all a part of his plan - he wanted to end Gintama in an epic manner so that he could start a new anime and be the main character of a better series.
However, Kintoki had not counted on the fact that Gin-san will want to sacrifice himself for the sake of everyone. And Kintoki had not considered the fact that Gin-san’s soul lives in all the characters of the series, so however hard Kintoki tried, he would not be able to erase all memories of Gintoki and Gintama.
There is a touching scene when Kagura, Shinpachi, and Otae help Gintoki to contain the memory-altering explosion caused by Kintoki’s death... And then there is Mantama.
WTF is Mantama anyway? XD Well, even Mantama has Katsura, who actually looks pretty much the same as usual.
Turns out it was a virtual world Tama had created to teach Kintoki a lesson. Kintoki tries to use it as proof that Gintoki is a useless main character because he can’t even destroy his enemies alone.
Gintoki: ‘You’re absolutely right. I can’t do anything alone. Everyone here has their flaws and imperfections.
But that’s what drives us to work together. Together we make the perfect main character.’
And then there is a happy ending scene.
Episode discussion:
What have I learned from this episode: never doubt Sorachi-sensei, Gintama is always perfect. Just in the last episode discussion I was complaining about how Katsura never gets serious moments these days, and how he is turned into a comic relief character. See how wrong I was, this episode perfectly shows that Katsura can be serious and is totally awesome at it!
We can really see how highly Katsura values his friendship with Gintoki. They made that promise to each other something like 200 episodes ago, but he still remembers it! This once again shows that for Katsura honour and promises really matter, as they should for a real samurai.
Also, we can see that Katsura has a way with words, he says really beautiful and profound things. Of course, him being the leader of a revolutionary movement, he would have to be charismatic and have the ability to inspire people with his words. But we don't really see him doing that in the series. This time, however, that speech about the silver sword in their souls was almost as touching as Gintoki's usual speeches.
We can also see some of Katsura's super cool sword skillz. Or at least, he is holding a katana in some moments of the episode XD That is also something that rarely happens. Well, he carries the katana around, but he doesn't actually draw the sword so often. But here he even used it against the attackers, so we can conclude that his sword skills have not become rusty.
So basically this episode shows Katsura in a very positive light, he is very heroic here. The power of friendship and his strength of will did not let him get brainwashed, and he significantly contributed to Kintoki's downfall. And looked perfect all the time! XD
