Costuming Fun Times

Or rather, Katsuko is going to be spending the next few weekends sewing up costumes for Necronomicon since she enjoys doing it herself rather than buying everything :D

Yes, I'm weird. Shut up.

Anyways, both apollymi and I are going the steampunk route for our Necro-gear. She's got a couple of options she'd like to go with, and money permitting I'm gonna do my damnedest to make both of them up for her. For myself, on the other hand, I'm doing one almost-fully-handmade costume by mixing and matching.

This weekend, I plan to start on the full skirt from this pattern (the purple one) in a mottled shiny green fabric that I bought a over a year ago (I had intended to make both skirt and jacket for Dragoncon last year, then never got around to it), a petticoat for one of Li's costumes (I would link the pattern, but for some reason it's not up on Butterick's web site; I thought it might be out-of-print, but it's not even on that page!!), and skirt "B" from this pattern for her other costume. The last one I likely won't finish up, if only because in order to hide the hem line between the upper section of skirt and the "tattered" bottom part, we're planning to do a layer of lacey fabric over the whole length of the skirt; I'm going to just cut it to look tattered without resorting to having to sew it exactly the same way.

After pay day, we hope to buy the lacey over-skirt fabric and some sheer-looking not-quite-tull fabric to go over the petticoat (we're aiming to get a look something like this) for Li, and an oriental-style green-bronze-gold fabric for the corset I'm making using this pattern (the one in the bottom left corner) along with some gold-or-brass-toned hooks and eyes; no one in town - not even Joann Fabrics - sells busks (they sell boning but not corset busks, wtf?) and I'm not willing to pay for shipping costs on top of the $25+ I've seen them go for in online stores, so I'm cheating and going to do hook and eye closures in place of it. Hell, ain't like no one's never done it before; out of 5 of Li's corsets she's gotten over the past couple of years, only one has an actual busk while the others have hook and eye fastenings.

And wow, I made a sewing babble. Necro is in October, so I'm trying to get a jump on things now. We're actually going to Goodwill tonight to see if we can find shirts that would suit our needs (she's looking for something fairly simple that won't detract from the skirt(s) or corset, I'm looking for something with a little bit of frill or a high collar), so more to come on that.

...you didn't think I forgot about my dragons, now, did you?
