Being a gaijin

Jan 07, 2010 14:05

So I had my first gaijin experience today.  A gaijin is a foreigner in Japanese, but it's much more in-depth than that.  Even America born Japanese are considered gaijin.  There's even "No gaijin" clubs here, where only Japanese are allowed in.

Me and my unguided tour group were walking through Ebina mall, also known as Vinawalk.  It was me, 1 other black dude, and 3 pretty hefty/unattractive ladies, so we were the quintessential Stupid Fat Americans.  But as you all know, I'm not stupid, nor that fat.  To preface this, Vinawalk is an animal friendly place, and in Japan, dogs are treated incredibly well (and are also VERY expensive).  Owners give their pets clothes, and top of the line food.  They even have dog strollers.  So as we were walking this tall, attractive Japanese girl saw us, picked up her little sweater clothed dog, covered its eyes, and turned her back to us as she walked past.  I'm talking like a good 40-50 feet of walking sideways.  I was fucking pissed.  No one else in the group noticed, and I had to leave I was so angry.  I said goodbye and got on the train back to base.  Man was I pissed.
