The Kiss is one of Rodin's most widely recognized works. Originally conceived as part of The Gates of Hell but never incorporated into the final monument. The figures in The Kiss represent Paolo and Francesca from Dante's Inferno. Rodin captures the moment when the doomed pair realize their love, the book still clutched in Paolo's left hand. First exhibited in 1887, this passionate depiction of romantic love shocked viewers of the day primarily because of the female's shameless awareness of her sexuality. By 1888, however, the sculpture was accepted and admired by the French public, and the government commissioned a marble version, now located in the Musee Rodin, Paris. Rodin believed man and woman were originally one, and that they seek to reunite through erotic love.
