i love bicycles!

Riding my bike through the Panhandle on a warm San Francisco evening...bike path guiding my way...ringing my little bell to let the joggers and homeless people know I'm coming through...I still have a front basket on my bike and I love it. I love bike lanes and I love GG Park and I love bicycle bells. I love smiling at the bikers going the other way, and I love pulling up the the art studio in the park on my bike, smiling, a little out of breath, arriving. I love making mis-shapen mounds of wet clay on the wheel and smooshing it back up to try again. I love pressing clay into star molds in the hopes that someday I'll actually finish a project, and I love traipsing around the ceramics studio listening to my iPod, watching the retirees and silver foxes chat and eat home-made chocolate chocolate cookies. I love drinking iced lattes at Cafe International, listening to people debate whether to go to northern or southern Spain, waiting for my bippy to show up, saving half a donut for her on a cute little plate. I love it when my silly cat bites my ankles because she wants me to play with her, and I love hearing the other crazy kitten running across the gravel on the roof, springing through the window and plunking himself onto my girlfriend's feet.

I love sixth graders who are so excited to paint that they almost scream, and I love eighth graders who remind me of Sesame Street characters, joking around full of bravado and hot air. I love pre-teens who draw their heart out on a piece of paper, sharing their woes with the rest of the world with a simple drawing and a few words. I love it when a student chats me up appreciatively, but subtly, after I stand up for them, and I love having important conversations with young people and feeling like they might actually be listening. I love carpooling and chatting about stupid news and ridiculous new bands modeled after Devo (have you heard of Dev2.0? ridiculous!). I love spilling paint all over myself and smiling students thanking me for showing them how to do something or providing them with a camera to capture a few seconds of their amazing wacky world. Right now I feel like I have the best job in the whole wide world, I live in the best place in the whole entire world, and I have the most perfect girlfriend in the universe. Yay for warm, sunny days and springtime.
