My Three Things...

May 13, 2008 02:57

I haven't done any of my music reviews in a while but I'll talk about a few things...

#1. Radio

Ok, I sometimes still go hmm.. wonder what the general public is listening to and being brainwashed to i-tune download, limewire, napster, or shall I say it... still buy an actual cd? Who does besides office space generation x contenders, die-hard fans, and the baby-boomers whom still want to be hip, by hip, maybe 1998? But generally it's all digital these days and heck it's for the best. Now anyone is truly capable of getting a fan-base and connecting with people by having an audience listen, comment, and download their material. Thanks to myspace, i-tunes, etc. I still want to market my own material and music too but I know it takes a lot of work and I just haven't gotten around to it.

Anyway back to my main point here... RADIO. Yes, so I listen in on WYSP. (I have some beef with the Kid Chris Show but I'll save that topic for another day and it's more of a personal thing I had happen to me with those Jack-ass wanna bes and by that they are the diarrhea particles that came from the asses of Bam, Steve-O, and the rest of the Motley crew lead by Johnny Knoxville.) So I hear this song where it's recorded garage band style... Ok, I'm cool with that. Kind of Indie and grungy. Like Rolling Stones recording their famous Exile On Main St. record in a hot bunker out in a scorching desert. Except there is no desert here, no inspirational hallucinations of starving and over-heating while making every effort to get a take perfect, and well any talent at all. Btw: Guys practice a little before you record a song and at least keep some kind of coherent rhythm. It only gets worse this song I heard had nothing going for itself.

It's like the lead guitarist learned a few riffs and went "DUDE! I CAN PLAY! Check this out!" He plays the same three notes scale-style over and over and over. It sounds like a rip off of a classic rock song and I'm still fine with that but it also sounds like a loop you'll find in garage band or what your instructor teaches you in basic training. So he took some classes on youtube and that's that... I'm a rock star now MOM! I know the radio stations wanna be hip and keep up with the ever changing culture of youtube shock etc., DIY art noise rock scene, but the bands they are recruiting to exploit are embarrassing the truly talented musicians whom continue to struggle for a piece of the pie and at this point I mean the crumbs leftover.

Let's face it as many radio jockeys have said since the early 70's Rock is Dead because no one is really living under it's true standards. The idea of getting fame, attention, glory, and even the whole "party like a rock star" is not what rock was about. Yes it's true that that had happened and even though people talked trash how horrifying Woodstock 99 was... um... the 1969 show wasn't a picnic either. There were riots and fights at that one too. Take it, maybe nothing like lighting cars on fire but it most certainly had it's destructive moments. Let's face it we're animals and we will show it when necessary.

To wrap it up the way we glorify a thing is as destructive in itself. If you really want to find good music find out what your High School musician friends have been up to. Or go to an open mic night and listen to unrecognized talent in your own city. Philly itself I realized are full of people who are just doing it for the passion of music, not to get on radio. Besides these will be the musicians that years later people will be ripping off of, much like the 19 year old college kids I heard coming out of this little box that I wanted to throw out the window. But I'm better then that and besides it's not my lil' box to destroy. More of my music rants to come folks! Stay tuned...
