I had a leisurely afternoon of listening to music and playing with WoW Model Viewer. The result was this wallpaper showing a family portrait of my favorite Machiavellian lava-spewing dragons!
[CLICK HERE TO SEE IT BECAUSE I'M TOO LAZY TO MAKE A THUMBNAIL] Left to right: Nefarian, Onyxia, Deathwing, Sintharia, Obsidia (with the whelp Nelashrion hovering above them all in the middle).
(The latter two hail from
my dormant comic series. I can't make any promises but I have been working on some new pages.)
If you've been following beta screenshots at all you'll know that the Deathwing in this picture looks nothing like his model in Cataclysm.
Now, I'm sure it'll grow on me but the
Cataclysm model of human-form Deathwing doesn't thrill me. Mostly it's the receding hairline/widow's peak combination, plus the zombie skin tone, that bug me. His armor is totally badass and I approve of that, but from the neck up...bleh.
He was described as quite handsome in his "Lord Prestor" days, but he's going more for "make my enemies soil themselves in terror" these days instead of "this guy is awesome, I want to give him land and my daughter's hand." I understand that shift in priorities, but he can still look menacing and lava-ey without looking like a vampire or something. Ugh!
There were actually two earlier versions of Deathwing/Neltharion's human guise in the game. One was in the vanilla beta, of
"Lord Daval Prestor" in the same robes as "Katrana" would end up wearing (she looks better in them than he does...), where he appeared to be a white-haired male human. He was, of course, replaced by his daughter when WoW first went live.
The second version appears in one of the visions you see inside Yogg-Saron's brain in Ulduar. Sadly, I never have gotten far enough into that fight to see it myself. The couple of nights we worked on it in 10-man never got to the brain rooms. /sadface Anyway, there's a vision showing the Aspects creating the Dragon Soul, and there he appears as a bearded, black-haired human male wearing robes of dark gray and red. This is a bit closer to how Day of the Dragon describes him.
Anyway, I based my version in this fanart wallpaper mostly on the Ulduar model, with a slightly different beard, and added some cool-looking armor. As a fangirl, me likey.
As for Sintharia, she's supposed to be burned over half her face but since WoW doesn't have any helms that bisect the face vertically I found a very draconic-looking one that covers most of her face from the eyes down. I think it's a suitable substitute. Besides, they're shapeshifting dragons, they can look like whatever they want to, regardless of their true forms. :p (Don't ask me why Nefarian chooses to look like a black guy. I have no idea.)
[Edit: Almost forgot to mention, Sintharia appears in humanoid form in-game as a blood elf on Netherwing Ledge, using her alias Lady Sinestra. I made her human here to match the others but used the same hairstyle. Again, no reason she can't have multiple humanoid forms. Vaelstrasz has both human and orc forms, as does Korialstrasz.)
Also, the background is a screenshot of Nefarian's throne on the balcony of Blackwing Lair, taken in the Cataclysm beta. You can just fly up there on your mount now and, I don't know, have a picnic or something. ;)
