And another falls to the spell of the all-powerful goldfish

A young guy who works at the radio station with my parents got two tiny orange/gold fantail goldfish from his girlfriend as an early Valentine's Day present. He had mentioned really wanting to get some fish and she remembered. She bought him the two tiny fish, a 2 or 3 gallon fishbowl with gravel and three small silk plants.
He had them at work yesterday because he didn't have time to run home with them before his shift started. He had them on his desk, watching them chase each other around in circles and follow his finger, and he was in love.
So, knowing that my mom comes from a goldfish-obsessed household, he asked her what he needed to do to take the best care of them. Mom told him that bowls are a great big no-no for goldfish, and told him to get at least a 10-gallon tank, preferably a 20-gallon. He was a bit taken aback but listened and believed her that they need that sort of a setup. She showed him my website, with all the photos of my monster goldfish. ;D
He decided to save up for a tank, hoping they would be okay in a bowl until he could afford to upgrade.

There the situation stood last night when Mom told me about it. She just called me from the office to tell me that a friend of his had a 37-gallon tank that he wasn't using, so he loaned it to him indefinitely! It came with a filter and a light hood. He didn't have enough water treater to fill the whole tank, but he used up the little bottle that had come with the bowl, filled the tank part way, and, along with the pitiful handful of gravel and three plants, he put the goldfish in there last night.
He said they were having the time of their lives in there, swimming the length of the tank, swooping, diving, and playing. He's going to get more gravel, plants, etc, today or tomorrow. Sounds like he's been bitten by the goldfish bug, big time. ^_^ It's so cute. Heehee...
