We had a great day today with Nan - thanks for all your comments and well-wishes. And this evening, after a very full day, I just want to post this note I got from my dearest cousin in Australia, who is my soul-sister and knew my Grandmother many years ago. It moved me more than I can say.

Hi Katie,

Your Nan's celebration of her 100th birthday is really a celebration of the force of her spirit. Her determination to fight, against all odds, things she may not have completely understood, but knew she had to get on top of to survive.

How she survived the first half of her life is due to that spirit of hers that takes the good in things and negates the bad. She did that and she did it with love and humour. Then she gave to you something that can never be bought, the absolute certainly that you are a worthwhile person and someone worthy, not only of her love, but of the love of the ones who are dear to you.

Her fighting spirit survives in her determination to 'go home' and do the things that she is really not able to do now. It survives in her irascibility and her sometimes bad temper, her determination to get on top of whoever she considers is trying to thwart her. She can never give up. Age cannot wither her.

You must be very proud to have a woman of such strength as your Grandmother.

May she live long and continue to know you and to love you dearly.

With love,
Iris.
