Why, yes, this IS my Anime Expo 2008 Con Report!

Feb 08, 2009 14:07

Soooo... Anime Expo. Con report/photo dump. SUPER IMAGE-HEAVY. SUE ME. LET'S DO THIS.

(Can you tell that Cliff went out of town this weekend? It's totally why I'm getting shit done.)

I'm going to skip all the foreplay and go right into DAY ONE.

So despite the fact that my EPIC plans for a Morning Musume group had dwindled down to 5 girls with two last minute additions (who didn't make it on time ;_;), I still had a TON of fun in this costume. Only ONE person recognized us, and we weren't asked for a whole hell of a lot of pictures, but when I'm cosplaying as something I love with good friends, that's all that matters. Not to mention, I thought we all looked pretty hot. Aimi's costume was SPOT. ON., Velvy made a SUPER HOT YOSSIE, Diana captured the kick-ass, sexy teacher look that is Miki (;D), and Kei was a precious little punk Koharu. X3 My only regret was that Daisy and Joy as our last minute Reina and Sayu could not make it. T_T

Nevertheless, check out these great shots! :DDD

Teehee~ Diana was tossing her head back and totally not ready- it makes me giggle. She will hate me for posting this. XDDD

Next, we went to the tail end of the Shokotan panel, then Velvy went to enter the karaoke contest, and we met up with Aimi, who was also entering! We also saw fellow H!P cosplayers! BUONO! DESHITA~ <3

I suck at photography!

Much better!

H!P cosplayers! I forgot to put my shoes back on. XD

Did I mention that I cleverly shooped Daisy and Joy into one of Jason's pictures so we'd have a full group? :DDD

HAY LOOK, WE WERE ALL THERE!

After our Momu fun was had, Velvy suddenly remembered that OH SHIT, we needed to grab our forums for Pop Shock! It was only 4:30, so it wasn't too late, but it WAS rather close. We filled them out, then headed back to our room at about 5 to get dressed. We rushed as quickly as we good, and were in costume by 7, on our way to Pop Shock, which started at 7:30. We got there at 7:15... as they were announcing awards. Confused and distraught, we found out that Pop Shock had been moved forward to start at 7 this year, rather than 7:30, and as they had only had 8 entrants, the whole thing was over in less than 10 minutes. Ouch.

After everyone cleared out of the room, I went to talk to the girl controlling the sound system to ask if we could borrow 4 minutes of her time to make a video of us doing the dance, since we had been up until 3 am practicing the night before. Before the girl could answer, Kenji jumped in and started power tripping and basically came up with several completely bullshit reasons as to why we couldn't do it (first, he asked to see my badge, then when I showed him, he was like "OH, YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING WITHOUT BANDAI'S PERMISSION." and I was like "WTF, I'm working in a booth, they don't OWN me," then he came up with more nonsensical bullshit). After arguing for a bit, I realized that he was stark-raving crazy, and nothing I said could convince this asshole to let us make a recording on a stage with NO AUDIENCE, so I just yelled, "YOU KNOW WHAT? NEVERMIND. JUST FORGET IT." and then I walked away and CRIED because Kenji is an evil, evil douche bag who does not deserve to run ANYTHING at AX, let alone EVERYTHING related to cosplay. Thank GOD he'll be gone this year.

After Diana, Daisy, and Velvy calmed me down, Velvy left with Kei to go to a concert... and we got these, our only pictures together. ;_;

Luckily, Daisy had her fancy camera, and she took several WONDERFUL pictures of myself and Diana!

Apparently, Diana said something funny. Did you guys know I look sofa king wee todded when I laugh?

WE DUNNO, DO U?

BUTT BUDDIES LOL

And one more by PopeCerebus-

Then we went to do Anime Singled Out, which was an.... interesting experience. LOL. Laura is also quite possibly the chillest girl I have ever met in my life. D and I just LOVED her.

Diana was still in bunny girl-pose mode! XD And check out creepy eyes in the background!

So, yeah, ASO. Fun stuff, but obvs, Diana and I won't be doing it next year as neither of us are single. Still got a free badge for doing it in '08, though! :D

Day two started off with getting into my 3rd (and final) Hello! Project costume, Takahashi Ai in Morning Musume's Osaka Koi no Uta PV. Even though it's really unrecognizable, I still thought this costume was fun and adorable, and I felt like a flouncy fairy! Yaaaaaaay~ Diana was THE SCRAPPED PRINCAAAAAASS. lol Inside jokes. We actually got photographed in these for Cosmode... the only time we ever saw the Cosmode photographer. XDDD The best part was that all day long, we mostly took pictures together... and our costumes clashed horribly. XD

LOL ERIK.

We both have dead eyes here. lol

Yep, still dead.

Aw, that's better.

Then we met up with Daisy and Joy, and Daisy captured some really wonderful shots of D and myself. ;D

HOPE ON MY BACK, PRINCAAAASS~ I'LL TAKE YOU TO FAIRY LAAAAND!

I'm a delicate flower.

lol digging through purse

My favorite shot of us EVAR~

Although I never got to meet up with the rest of the group (as it never really assembled ;_; ), the cool part is that D and I found Shokotan wandering around the con!

Erik took this picture. LOOK HOW SMALL SHE IS.

No, really- she was standing up straight and I was nearly DOUBLED OVER.

To make things even MORE random than Morning Musume and Pacifica, people soon started wanting pictures of the two of us with Erik as KENPACHI. YEAH. I KNOW. So for lolz, Erik would steal my pose! It was priceless, so I had to get a shot of it, too.

Having been harrassed all day by Alex to get into Yoko, as I had mistakenly promised to do, I rushed the fuck back to our hotel room, changed, grabbed the HUMONGOUS RIFLE that Lionel lent me, and ran back to the convention to wear Yoko for like... seriously, 15 minutes. Fail. Obviously, no pictures of this waste of time were found. Which was good, as I still hadn't fixed up the costume at that point. I forget what we did that night... but I'm sure it was also full of fail and lose. OH, WAIT, that's right- we got kicked out of the masquerade for missing the Mandatory Meeting. But then we got back in. But then we got disqualified for craftsmanship. Why Kenji felt that was a neccessary punishment for missing a meeting that we've attended every year for the past three years (and trust me, the content doesn't change) I'll never understand. The other stipulation was that my unfinished audio file needed to be turned in... in the next 30 minutes. So we HAULED ass back to the hotel room, grabbed what few cast members we could, and recorded our skit to the best of our ability in a cold reading, live-recording-like session. Because I'm really picky about voice acting, I ended up playing... pretty much every other character in the skit. And MAN, WAS IT OBVIOUS. lol The voice cast looked like this:

Balalaika - Me (pitch digitally lowered)
Rock - Trevor
Benny - Erik
Revy - Me
Eda - Anela
Roberta - Diana
Shenhua - Me
The twins - Me
Masa/Nick - Trevor (pitch digitally raised)
Soni - Anela (pitch digitally raised)
The twins - Me

Is that not ridiculous? I'm sorry, guys, I promise it's not because I think I'm OMG~ TALENTED~, it's just that when I write the jokes, I imagine them being delivered a certain way, and we didn't have time for tons and tons of retakes, like I usually ask my voice actor friends to do WEEKS in advance. Anyway, somehow we did it and made the deadline and got to be in the masquerade again... just, completely ineligible for anything other than a performance award... and last year and the year before, we won Best Performance and Best Performance Runner-up, respectively. -_-;;;;;

Needless to say, we should have known then that we were doomed from the start.

Sometimes I like to pretend like day 3 didn't happen. My wake-up call came at 10 am, when Ami kindly called me to let me know that the 15 seconds that our skit went over was no bueno because of the Kodiak Theatre time stipulations, and they were going to either chop off the end of our skit, or I needed to come in and make some cuts. So I threw on a shirt and jeans and without make-up ran down to Masq. HQ, oh, only they wouldn't let me on the buses at first because I didn't have a Shuttle Pass stamp. AWESOME.

I ended up cutting a lot of the lines that made our skit actually make sense in some parts, and I also sped up the entire audio file, so if you thought our skit seemed rushed and nonsensical, there you have it!

Because we had such a ridiculously huge cast, and our cast had important obligations, and the hotels we were all at were MILES apart, and because some of us decided that lunch is a pretty important meal, we missed our last chance to rehearse our skit before going backstage at six. Oh, well. I finally got into Revy in Trevor's hotel room, only for our group to be kicked out of TREVOR'S hotel room because one of his roommate's girlfriend was an INTERNET TOUGH GUY and screamed at us to vacate because they wanted to nap or some shit. The best part is that we weren't actually being loud, she seemed to just want to prove she was a bad-ass in front of "Masa D. Luffy." I was so proud when our entire group showed MAJOR class by exiting politely and quietly, rather than telling her off for being so rude.

Anyway, backstage. We tried to rehearse. And failed. There was drama. And everyone was miserable. We performed. Everyone was still miserable. Half the group decided to peace out for food or just... well, peace, and myself, Anela, Erik, and Trevor stayed behind in case we happened to win an award or something. We used this time to cheer up and do a photoshoot in some pretty sweet locales RIGHT outside the Kodiak Theatre loading dock! Unfortunately, Anela lost all those photos that needed processing, and I've yet to get them back to her (because they were on my camera.) Working on that!

For now, pics of us onstage!

HOLY SHIT, DIANA, YOU ARE ROBERTA. I AM LEGIT SCARED.

"What's that up ahead? It looks like... a pirate?"

I happened to blink as this was being taken, and combined with my outspread arms, I looked like I was doing my best impression of Jesus, thus I SHOOP-DA-WHOOPED it. Enjoy!

"Aaaand done. 4chan is officially hacked." (Revy: *ded*)

The best pictures of our FULL BL group were taken backstage. And that is it. ;_;

My durr face. Aimi and JJ look so perfect! *_*

So after not returning to the stage for awards, the four of us who stayed decided that we were hungry as hell, so we drove to Subway for food. While we were eating, we got a call from Ami who informed us that we HAD gotten an award and that somehow, they forgot to announce it or something. Which was great because then we called the rest of our group with the good news, only to hear their really unenthusiastic response. ._. With renewed energy, we returned to the theatre for a photoshoot, courtesy of Anela's L33T SKILLZ.

LOL. Whose idea was this, HONESTLY?

A manip of the first:

SO COOL. *_*

While we were taking photos, I saw what I thought had to be THE best 10th Doctor cosplayer I had EVER seen, the EVER-ADORABLE Kevin!

I told him, "My best friend is going to be SO sad she missed you!!!!!!!!" Who would have known that a few months later, the two would be dating? :33333333

ME, THAT'S WHO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, Al took some nice shots, too-

Then Anela and I got seerry~

Anela retreats into her collar.

After this long, tiring, dramatic day, I needed some alcohol, so the four of us + Andy decided to hit up Nick's room party. Good times were had. I got very drunk. It was GREAT. I came home LATE. Everyone was really worried about me because my shit wasn't packed and we had to check out the next day at 11, when I would be doing the Bandai booth. HELLO, MORE STRESS! :DDDDDD

Amazingly enough, we managed to avoid any... MAJOR problems on Sunday. I actually got to the booth ON TIME, I had an AMAZING encounter with Shokotan that ended up with my being in a BLOG entry (!!!!!!!!!), and our check-out went smoothly, despite my not being able to get back before 11. There was a lot of unfortunateness due to a lack of communication that I hope to never have to deal with again at a con- let's just say that 2008 was a year of mistakes I don't ever want to make again. But now that they've happened, I'm sure avoiding them will be MUCH easier! Buuuut yeah, onto the pictures from Sunday, as they cheer me up! (SHOKOTAN~ *_*)

Here's the stuff from the booth! BE PREPARED FOR DOOM. TONS OF IMAGES.

First, those taken by Shokotan!

Note new clip and restyled bangs!

Note gun borrowed from Lionel! ALSO NOTE PROXIMITY TO SHOKOTAN.

Oh yeah, I bought glasses, too.

Hurf-durf grin.

The back of the cape Alex commissioned from me. I literally made it in 24 hours before my flight. I did not sleep.

SHE TOUCHED MY LIONEL'S GUN!! Also, I have no waist.

EEEEEEEEEEE~!

MMMMMM~ MANLY KAMINA. My face says it all. ;D

Heaven-piercing.

Jason captures my weird, flattened ribcage.

I look DURRR, but Shokotan! *_*

*____________________________*

Before I had to literally ZOOM back to the hotel room to pack, Al grabbed a few more shots outside the dealers room.

Ugh, lovehandles.

(Sorry, I can't decide which I like better. XD)

Okay, so like I said, I packed. Then I headed back to the con to be "Yuuki" for Alli and JJ's Genderbend group. I NEVER REALIZED ALLI'S PAIN UNTIL THIS MOMENT. IT IS SO HARD TO BE EMOTIONLESS IN PHOTOS. It was so... boring!!! Despite that fact, the photoshoot was actually quite fun! XD The following photos were taken by Leonard, Jason, and Muze, so a few of them are the same poses, different photogs!

Genderbend Sentai!

LOL Check out how awesome we're being in the background. XD

You think this is a photo of Jessie, but clearly it's really a photo of our dance party starting up in the back.

Youuuuuu want to come to our dance party? MAYBE.

lol @ my tiny ponytail. I was BAD-ASS YUUKI.

Telling me how to do the sentai pose. XDDDDD

More training.

GOT IT.

When you think about it, this photo is disturbing in SEVERAL ways.

And it kind of looks like I'm pondering whether or not to get in there, too.

Diana wins the cute award in this one.

I look like I'm thinking about something very deep.

Yuuki just LOVES Witch Hunter Robin!!!

OUR AFOREMENTIONED DANCE PARTY!!

The quote the chons, Jessie and I both look like someone just stole our lunch. XDDDD

And again!

Our best Heero Yuy imitations.

Yuuki does not approve of Jessie's panties being visible.

If you look in the background, you shall see myself wearing my pink top, the brown pants, and the Yuki wig, and possibly whispering something to Alli. If you look closely in the foreground, you miiiiiight see Jessie being silly for a video. MAYBE.

This picture by Daisy captures what happens to me at cons- I sport colored eyebrows all day. XD

Then for the rest of Sunday, D and I chilled- positively THRILLED that this nightmarish con was over, and ecstatic that soon, we'd be in downtown LA for shopping and then at Six Flags, with no pressure to do ANYTHING but have an actual VACATION. What a relief!

Never before have I been so thrilled that a con was over. Usually, I'm all depressed and melancholy on the last day, wishing it would never end but this year? I was like "THANK FUCKING GOD." Yeah, that? Sucks. That's NOT how cons should be. I'm not giving up on AX, yet, but let's just say this: if 2009 is as stressful as 2008, I may never venture out to another non-local con again. NO PRESSURE, 2009. NO PRESSURE.

This picture captures my AX experience, I think. Thanks, Erik. XD
