I feel very strongly about this. (Philadelphia drama! A city divided! Oh noes!)

Geno's steaks, arguably one of the two most famous cheesesteak places in the city, put up a sign like two years ago (maybe not quite that long, but it feels like people have been talking about this forever) saying "this is America. Speak English." Now the city is holding a hearing to see if its legal or not.

Dear reporters giving Geno's free publicity/people who eat at Geno's:

*ahem*

PAT'S AND GENO'S ARE THE TWO WORST CHEESESTEAK PLACES IN THE CITY. THEY ARE FOR TOURISTS AND PEOPLE FROM NEW JERSEY. JESUS CHRIST WHY DO YOU THINK THEIR FOOD IS GOOD. STOP CARING!!!!

This one person is quoted in the article as saying "I like the food at Geno's but I believe it is discriminatory towards people of other ethnic backgrounds." What baffles me is why the hell do you like the food at Geno's? Are you used to eating shit?

And yes, I do have all sorts of opinions about the sign itself, whether English should be our national language, freedom of speech, and immigration. I'm not entirely out of touch with the important issues at hand and the ramifications of this hearing, potentially on a national scale. But the South Philadelphian in me gets so pissed off when people try to make Pat's and Geno's out to be Philadelphia's Cheesesteak gods. NO. No, they are not our gods. You only eat there if you're drunk and its four in the morning and nothing else is open. Please do not come to Philly and think "I want to taste this cheesesteak that those crazy people are always raving about. I know, I'll go to Pat's! Or Geno's!" NO. Bad tourist. Why don't you just go to New York next, but only eat at Subway and Applebees. Clearly if you go to Applebees and order a New York strip steak it totally counts as eating authentic New York food.
