Chapter 5
*BEEP*BEEP*BEEP* Alex’s hand reached and turned off the alarm. Then she retreated back into the warmth of the bed, rolling over and kissing Serena’s neck as she spooned her. “Mmmm, you do know that I have to get up don’t you?” Serena muttered, turning around and kissing Alex lightly on the lips, “How am I supposed to get up when you are giving me so many reasons to stay in bed?”
“It’s all about what you want to do: do you want to stay in this warm bed with me, or do you want to walk on the cold floor to the cold shower then get dressed and head into the cold outdoors, to the cold car then head into the cold DA’s office?”
“The DA’s office is not cold, sweetheart,” Serena replied.
“No, but Arthur Branch is.” Alex smiled as Serena pushed her onto her back.
“Now is that any way to talk about my boss?”
“It is when he isn’t around to hear it,” Alex grinned, then pushed Serena back onto her back. “So are you staying or getting up?”
“Getting up. I have to go to work, unlike some people.” Serena pushed Alex off of her and then climbed out of the bed quickly before Alex could try to pull her back in. “Care to join me?”
“At work?” Alex grinned.
“What is with you today? In the shower, but if you don’t want to….” Serena trailed off, knowing what Alex would do. Sure enough, Alex got up and followed her into the bathroom.
At work, after a 90 minute shower, Serena was busily looking over some papers for court when she heard a knock at her door. “Come in.”
“Hey there Serena. Brought you some coffee, although you don’t look like you need it,” Casey acknowledged, causing Serena to blush slightly, “I’m assuming that this means that everything between you and Alex is OK?”
“Thanks Casey. Everything between Alex and I is great. This past month has been amazing, although she has been getting a little bit bored just sitting around the apartment. You know, it’s almost like we never broke up in the first place. Everything is fine, her wound has healed completely and she goes back to work next week.”
“Well, I’m glad to hear it. I’m also glad to see that smile on your face.”
“Me too.” Casey turned, and there was Alex. “Hi Casey, thought I’d come see how my woman was doing. That, and the fact that I was really bored sitting at home; hey baby.” Alex walked over to Serena and gave her a quick kiss on the lips before straightening up and saying to Casey, “So how’s Olivia doing?”
“Why are you asking me?” Casey blushed. Alex knew she had struck gold, she had known how Liv felt about Casey for a long time, and now she knew how Casey felt about Liv.
Deciding to rescue Casey from Alex’s sarcasm, but not being able to resist teasing her friend herself, Serena responded, “No playing matchmaker baby. It’s not your job to drag both of them out of the closet and then force them together.”
If it was possible for Casey to turn redder than her red hair, she did it then; but the prosecutor refused to back down, “Serena, you should know by now that I’m out and single. I can’t speak for Liv, and you are closer to her than I am anyway, Alex, so maybe I should be asking you that question.”
“Liv’s single too. Bye ladies, I’m off to breakfast with Mom.” With that, Alex turned and left the room.
“Maybe you should put a leash on her, Serena.” Casey said, still a bright red.
“I would, but she’d just chew through it. So about Liv….”
“Drop it Serena. I don’t want to talk about Olivia Benson.”
“Alright, but I can add something that Alex didn’t; Liv never slept with Alex Cabot.” Serena winked and then returned to her trial notes.
Chapter 6
Kind of M…sort of
One week later, Alex stepped back into the stationhouse. Cragen came out and greeted her, “Good to see you back Alex. You and Ed have a DB, so head out.”
“Thanks Cap’n,” Alex replied, then smiled at her partner, “You driving, or should I?”
On their way to the scene, Ed and Alex had some chit-chat, catching up on what all had been happening with Alex and Serena, and what was going on at the stationhouse. “So, how are things between you and Serena?”
“Great. It took some work at the beginning, of course, but now everything’s great. I feel so much happier now, and work isn’t such an integral piece of my life anymore.” Alex said, smiling slightly, “I just feel so complete with Serena. I’ve never felt that way with anyone before, you know that.”
Ed smiled. He was happy to see his partner in a good mood and in an even better relationship. When the two of them had broken up, Ed had been there to console Alex, just as she had been there for him when his wife Annie left. Early on he had guessed that based on how Serena and Alex had been, Serena didn’t mean what she had said to Alex; both he and Alex knew that, but Serena had disappeared, and during their separation Alex had not dated. He wasn’t sure if Serena was aware of that, or if Alex would even admit it to anyone other than himself and her mother.
At the scene, Alex got out first and walked over to the M.E., “So what do we have?”
“Good to see you back Detective; the victim is a young girl, Asian, roughly 5’ tall, about 16 years old, I’m guessing. Apparent C.O.D. is strangulation, but we’ll know more after the autopsy.”
“Sick bastard. No panties, just the long t-shirt covering her. This wasn’t a very personal killing.” Ed hated the young ones most of all, all of the detectives did, but with Ed it hit closer to home, just as it did with Alex.
When Alex had been 3 years old, her mother had gotten pregnant with her baby sister. During labor, there were complications with her mother, she had gotten an infection and died. Her sister was born perfectly healthy, fortunately, but her father did not see it that way. He was distraught, and turned violent. He never hit Alex or her sister Natalie, but he sexually abused Alex from the time her mother died. When she was ten she hit puberty, and her father, not wanting to risk a pregnancy, started to abuse Natalie. One night Alex heard Natalie calling for help, screaming Alex’s name. Alex ran to Natalie’s room but her father threw Alex against the wall and continued to assault Natalie. Alex ran into the kitchen and took out a knife; she then ran back into Natalie’s room and stabbed her father 34 times. She then took Natalie and they hid in a closet afraid he would come after them. The SVU detectives came and took Natalie out of the closet, but Alex refused to come out; until, that is, a female detective by the name of Marisa Trent came and talked to Alex. Marisa explained that Alex had done nothing wrong and then promised to take care of her. Marisa adopted Alex, partly because she had felt such a strong connection to the child, and partly because Alex had seemed so strong, and yet so vulnerable. She couldn’t afford to take Natalie in, and so Natalie had been left in the system until a wealthy family came to adopt her when she was 8. Marissa had been worried that Alex might become suicidal in her teen years, but in fact it was Natalie who overdosed on pills as a teenager. As a teenager, Alex had been strong. She went into the Air Force right out of high school, and then went on to NYU, graduating with a degree in psychology. She had joined the NYPD right out of college and when she was promoted to detective she had requested to join SVU.
Gathering nothing from the crime scene that could be of any value, the two of them headed back to the station house, getting caught in NYC’s never ending rush hour; Ed decided to talk to Alex in the car about the DB, “So, what’s your take on the perp and the victim? Related or not?”
Alex thought for a minute as she slowed the car to a stop. “Not personal, no relation whatsoever. The defamation of the body, lack of panties, a relative would have covered her up; they wouldn’t have thrown her out like yesterday’s trash.” For Alex these cases frequently in the past had given her nightmares, especially if a relative had been the perp, until she had gotten help. They weren’t nightmares for Alex, they were flashbacks of the abuse she suffered by her father.
Now Alex still had nightmares about the things she saw daily at work, but they weren’t flashbacks. She had resolved what her father had done to her all those years ago. “Do you mind if I stop by Olivia’s place and see how she’s doing?”
Ed shook his head, “No, go ahead. I’ll tell the captain if I get back before you do, although with this traffic I’ll bet that you get back first.”
Alex climbed out of the car and started walking toward Liv’s apartment. It took her about ten minutes to get there, so along the way she had called her Mom to ask for her insights into the case. Her mother had been an SVU detective, until she retired about 5 years ago.
“Hey Mom, how are you?”
“I’m doing fine dear, what about you? And Serena?”
“Serena’s doing fine Mom, and so am I. I’m actually calling you about a case, can I come talk to you about it?”
“Well, I have plans for today, but tonight I should be available. Just come by, you can bring Serena!” Marisa had always liked Serena, and was deeply hurt when they had broken up.
“Sure Mom, I’ll bring Serena. I’ll talk to you tonight then, love you.”
“Love you too dear. Be careful!”
Chapter 7
In Olivia’s apartment, Alex sat down and chatted with Liv about coming back to work and how things were between her and Serena. Liv seemed particularly interested in the latter, but only understandably so. “So, about you and Casey…” Alex began, “I know something that you should be very interested in.”
“Oh?” Olivia’s eyebrow raised ever so slightly, “What?”
“Sorry, but I can’t tell you.”
“Come on Alex, what is it? Is she straight? Is that what you are going to tell me? I don’t care. It’s too late for Casey and me. We have too many issues between us, especially where work is concerned.”
“Liv, I have to go back to work, but I just want to say that too late is not something you can say about you and anyone. You are only too late when you’re dead. Take care of yourself.”
Meanwhile back at the DA’s office, “So about you and Liv…”
“There is no me and Liv! Jesus Serena, how many times do I have to say it? There is not, nor will there ever be a ‘me and Liv.’ There’s too much baggage between us.”
“Do not, Casey, do not tell me there is too much baggage between the two of you. I know baggage; just look at myself and Alex, we’ve been through it all. If there are two people most suited to give you advice on baggage, it’s us. Just talk to me Casey, seriously.” Serena was getting tired of Casey’s foul mood about her relationship (or lack thereof) with Olivia. “Alex and I know you two. We are your nearest and dearest friends, please just talk to me.”
“Fine. I’ll admit it. I have a major crush on Liv.”
“Now we’re getting somewhere, oops, hang on, Alex is calling…Hey baby.”
“Now if that wasn’t me what would you do?” Alex enjoyed teasing Serena, particularly on the phone. “I just left Liv’s place and I’m heading back to work. How do you feel about eating dinner with my Mom tonight?”
“I’d love to. I haven’t seen Marissa in such a long time; it’ll be nice to catch up. How’s Liv holding up?” Casey’s head perked up at the mention of Liv’s name.
“She’s as bored as I was. Although she did tell me something interesting…” Alex went on to relay the entire conversation she had had with Liv.
“Really? Hmmm, what are we going to do now? Maybe we should play devil’s advocate for them. Do you really think so? You know, Casey’s in my office right now, so maybe we should talk later about her and Liv. Wait, let me ask her; Casey, do you want to go to lunch with Alex and me?”
“Umm, sure, I guess,” Casey was both confused and slightly distraught about what Alex might want to see her about.
“Where do you want us to meet you? See you there in 20 minutes baby. Love you”
“Love you too. Bye.” Alex hung up and smiled, proud of herself. If Liv was going to mope about for the rest of her life because she felt she didn’t deserve Casey that was Liv’s business. But when the feeling was mutual, there was no way Alex could resist hooking them up, and she knew that Serena felt the same way too.
