Canada Day - July 1st 2010

Jul 06, 2010 22:03

For my fellow Canuck 'snowywolfowl' as promised. Sorry they're late.

We started off our celebrations at home watching the snowbirds flying over. After lunch we headed towards Ottawa parked our car on the Quebec side and biked the rest of the way across the river. Canada Day was in full swing and the streets were filled!

Up on Parliament Hill some off-duty RCMP were on hand to have their pictures taken with tourists. And at no charge! The lady RCMP was very attractive and a lot of guys wanted their picture with her.

This was the stage set up for the festivities that happend around the noon time with Her Majesty the Queen this year which I didn't see live but on TV. Some were already starting to choose their piece of the lawn for the evening show and fireworks and it was only 3pm.

Some patriotic street art. All donations welcomed including compliments.

Meanwhile on Wellington Street more street art - lots of red and white. The further it got down towards Sussex the more clogged with partyers it got.

At Sussex a lovely young angel captured everyone's attention. Mime's the word! I thought she looked very much like Kate Winslet in Titanic.

After being completely overwhelmed by people in downtown Ottawa we headed over to our side of the river for dinner and sangria on a patio and then over to the beer gardens of the Museum of Civilization where people were gathering to watch the live screen show of The Hill performances and for the fireworks display. This is by far the best place to see them across the Ottawa River. I so love the rounded curves and architecture of this building.

The screen show of the live performances on The Hill just the other side of the Peace Tower kept everyone amused and partying.

It was almost as good as being there. The Barenaked Ladies were a real crowd pleaser as usual on both sides of the river.

The Parliament Hill partyers seemed just a litte bit more animated. Do ya think?

And to top off a great celebration day what everyone was waiting for -- The Fireworks! Just awesome!

Afterwards we biked back to our car managed to hook up with our son and his girlfriend and headed home. We had to work the next day and the next morning the city streets were all so clean and tidied up it was like it never happened. Got to love Ottawa for that it's one of the cleanest cities I've ever visited. And lots of green space too.

There you go snowy! A little piece of home for you.
