First of all Happy Valentine's Day to those on my flist that celebrate it and Happy Thursday to those that don't. Marks & Spencers will certainly be celebrating it as our branch was packed this morning. Amazingly, despite the long queues everyone was very cheerful and we were chatting happily amongst ourselves in a most un-British way. The conversations did mostly revolve around whether we were actually buying what we thought we were buying, and how would you tell what a horse chop looked like anyway, but it was all very cheery. This was possibly due more to the slightly warmer weather than the fact it was Valentine's Day, but it was nice whatever had caused it.
I had my surprise Valentine's treat yesterday when we went to the theatre. I knew we were going but I didn't know what it was going to be, which was fun. J had been sent an offer for a meal and then a show which altogether came to less than the actual price of the tickets. Obviously this was not a bargain to be resisted so we went to see...
...Top Hat. It was completely cheesy but great fun and the songs can't be beaten. The dancing was terrific and while the performers obviously weren't Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers they were excellent dancers. The whole thing looked fantastic and was just an excellent night out. The free meal at Fire and Stone, where we would probably have eaten anyway, was the icing on the cake. J loved the show but I think he enjoyed teasing me about what it was going to be almost more <3
And now back to the TV meme.
Day 04 - Your favourite show ever
If I'd been asked this 6 years ago I'd have said Buffy the Vampire Slayer, if I'd been asked this 12 years ago I'd have said Highlander: the Series, but just to show how fickle I am, the answer now is, of course, Merlin. Whether I give another answer in 6 years time remains to be seen but if they'd sat down and devised a show with my preferences in mind they would probably have come up with Merlin. The list would go: Arthurian legends which I've been obsessed with since I was four; medieval/fantasy background with magic; two handsome young male stars; two handsome young male stars with intense friendship; ensemble cast to provide textured relationships; handsome young men in armour with swords; dragons; a sense of humour; gorgeous locations and so on. Merlin ticked all of these for me. Were there things Merlin could have done better? Of course there were, but you don't choose what you love, and perfect shows seldom produce wonderful fanfic, which Merlin did and still does. Merlin also came along at a time when I particularly needed a shiny distraction, as fannish obsessions often do, so even if it ever slips from "favourite show ever" status it will always be special to me because I'm so grateful for that.
