Merlin 5.01

Nothing deep!

...and they're hanging from a tree! One of the things I love most about Merlin is that in the midst of all the epic our guys still make total idiots of themselves :)

Good opening episode. The snow and wolves looked awesome. Morgana seems to have spent some time hanging out with the White Witch. Liam Cunningham rocks! Brilliant to see Queen Annis again and I do hope that's not the last we see of her. I thought the actress playing Sefa did a good job of making her sympathetic in her treachery. She's a pawn in a bigger game but I'm not surprised that Gwen sentenced her to death. That single act underlined how far the character of Gwen has come since we first met her in Season 1 and Angel Coulby did a lovely job of showing her both as Gwen chatting to her servant and Queen Guinevere pronouncing judgement on that same servant.

Arthur and Merlin were their usual devotedly sniping selves and the slash nearly wrote itself at times. Arthur wanting to know what was bothering Merlin at the campfire was lovely as was Merlin's understanding that Arthur must rescue his men. I don't know how he does it but when Bradley James's Arthur says that they must do the right thing I absolutely melt and believe him totally. Only screen Arthur for me ever!

I had my hand over my mouth at Merlin's vision to stop myself from screaming "Noooooo..." out loud. Camlann is, as the Doctor would say, a fixed point in all the versions of the Arthurian legends but I so want this Merlin to break "the never-ending circle" (if I've remembered the quote correctly) of Arthur's fate. If not, bring on the reincarnation fics!

Kudos to Alex Vlahos for making "Hello, Arthur" as creepy as Asa Butterfield's "My name is Mordred" and kudos to the casting director for finding someone who could believably be that little boy grown up.

Loved Merlin juggling :)

And there were shirtless knights. "Merlin" is most definitely back :)

merlin season five, merlin
