I went to the Museum of London today with my friend T on a hunt for something we both remembered very fondly. You would have to be British and of a certain age to share our glee when we found it so I'll put the rest behind a cut, but first of all I will say that before finding anything in the Museum of London you need to find the Museum of London which is not as easy as it sounds!
We were in search of Spotty Dog from The Woodentops! Not only did we find Spotty Dog, but also Andy Pandy, Teddy and Bill and Ben the Flowerpot Men. I have to report that Spotty Dog is looking rather elderly and battered and is definitely not "the very biggest spotty dog you ever did see" but it was fun to find him. Here he is in his heyday

The museum has some fascinating new galleries but we were really a bit too busy talking to take that much in, but Spotty Dog was not the only thing that made us nostalgic. When we both worked near Oxford Circus a sight that greeted us every night was
Stanley Green the Protein Man with his placards and pamphlets, which are now lovingly preserved in the Museum of London. It's a bit odd when something that was a very familiar sight for many years turn up in a museum. I feel a bit old now.
In other news I really enjoyed last night's "Sherlock" by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. I'd read the interview with Steven Moffatt in the Radio Times where he justified his updating and I have to say that I thought it worked really well. The fact that they didn't have to change where Watson acquired his war wound was rather sad, but everything else was great fun. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were excellently cast and I loved the way that Martin Freeman made Watson the intelligent man he should be rather than a buffoon. My only quibble was that I guessed at least the occupation of the villain before Holmes did, which shouldn't happen, but everything else about it was very entertaining and I'm really looking forward to more.
And now back to Merlin Comic Con related squeeing *g*.
