Borrowing this from
gillo :) Waterstones are doing a children's literature promotion and asked past and present Children's Laureates to pick their seven favourite children's books. The results are
here and I'd certainly agree with some of them.
For my own list I'm going to go with books I read before I was 10, which excludes Tolkien, because I think they formed my tastes in reading to this day!
In no particular order they are
The Weirdstone of Brisingamen by Alan Garner (There was an interview with him on R4 a couple of weeks ago. For any Garner fans that missed it I'm sure it will be repeated.)
The Midnight Folk by John Masefield
King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table by Roger Lancelyn Green
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfeild
Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome
The Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff
On a different day I'd probably pick an entirely different seven but these are today's choices :)
I'm waiting in for the gas man today and seizing the opportunity to do some necessary computer maintenance. If I'm not around for a bit you'll know that I probably shouldn't be allowed near anything technological!
