I should have suspected something like this.

The virus infecting the vinculum--it's a weapon, designed by species 6339 to attack the Borg. I can't say I blame them, considering how their culture and people have been almost completely destroyed by the Collective (and I'm more than a little envious at the ingenuity--and simplicity--of their solution, not to mention the self-sacrifice needed to deliver this blow). Unfortunately, *anyone* with Borg implants--whether currently severed from the Collective or not--is susceptible to this weapon. I tried to explain to their leader that a member of my crew has been adversely affected, but he wasn't exactly sympathetic. In fact, the aliens are furious we picked up the vinculum; they *want* a cube to come investigate the debris field and thereby pass the infection on. And they're accusing us of obstruction.

Bottom line: the aliens want the vinculum back. Now. I told them we will return it, but we first need time to develop a way of countering its effects (paristorres is working on the dampening field once more). The aliens have threatened they will attack if we don't surrender it at once. I pointed out that if they destroy Voyager, they'll also destroy their precious vinculum. Their leader called my bluff, however, reminding me that the vinculum survived the destruction of a cube.

The alien ship is coming round now on what looks like an attack run. Their weapons are charged.

Tuvok had better hurry with the mind meld. We're rapidly running out of time on several fronts.
