Transcript of The Day of the Doctor Part II

Nov 30, 2013 20:14

[Back at the Tower, Kate and Clara arrive at security.]
Kate [into her phone] The Doctor will be trying to send us a message. We're looking for a string of numerals from around 1550 approximately. Priority One. I'm going to need access to the Black Archive.
[A security guard looks through the car window and waves them in. Clara and Kate make their way down a passage lined with corrugated iron and cabling. Light beams in through overhead ventilation fans.]
Kate The Black Archive. Highest security rating on the planet. The entire staff have their memories wiped at the end of every shift.
[Clara notices a round fan-like on the wall, presumably for the wiping of memories.]
Kate Automated memory filters in the ceiling. [to a guard] Access please!
Atkins Ma'am! [he hurries to unlock the door with a key.
Kate Atkins, isn't it?
Atkins Yes, ma'am. First day here.
Kate [to Clara] Been here ten years.
Clara Lock and key? Bit basic, isn't it?
Kate We can't afford electronic security down here. Got to keep the Doctor out. The whole of the Tower is TARDIS-proofed. He really wouldn't approve of the collection.
Clara But you let me know.
Kate You have a top-level security rating from your last visit.
Clara Sorry - my what?
[She finds herself looking at a board containing lot of photos - including herself and Kate.]
Kate Apologies. We have to screen all his known associates. Can't have information about the Doctor and the TARDIS falling into the wrong hands.
[Other pictures on the board include Kamelion, Rory, Amy, River Song, Wilfred Mott, Rose and Captain Magambo - photos from a parallel universe apparently? - Craig Owens and Sophie, Sarah Jane, Ace, Martha Jones, Grace Holloway, the Brigadier, and Nyssa and Tegan among others. Clara moves away from the photos to a secure booth in front of which Kate is standing, staring at an object on a plinth.]
Clara What is that?
Kate [greedily] Time travel! A vortex manipulator bequeathed to UNIT by Captain Jack Harkness on the occasion of his death - well, one of them. No one can know we have this. Not even our allies.
Clara Why not?
Kate Think about it, Americans with the ability to rewrite history? You've seen their movies!
[A shot of the cell that once held the Doctors. Empty and clean, but with light shining on the pillar where Eleven did his earlier vandalism.]
Clara Okay, so, this is how we're going to rescue the Doctor?
Kate [as she opens the door into the small room] Not sure there's enough power for a two-way trip. In any event, we don't have the activation code. The Doctor knows we have this so he's always kept the code from us. Let's hope he changes his mind. [her phone rings and she answers it] Yes? Well, if you've found it, photograph it and send it to my phone!
[In the cell, a man takes a photograph of the graffiti on his mobile phone. The door to the Black Archive opens and Osgood and McGillop enter. Clara sees them.]
Clara Um, Kate, should they be here? Why have they followed us?
Kate [dismissively] Oh, they've probably just finished disposing of the humans a bit early. [as Clara realises there's something wrong] Dear me, I really do get into character, don't I?
[Zygon!Kate spits out bile and begins changing into a red rubbery creature with sucker. (No information is available on her kissing ability.) Clara backs into a corner of the room, trapped.]
O2 The Under Gallery is secured.
[Kate's phone alerts an incoming message. Clara grabs the vortex manipulator and begins entering the details]
Zygon You are to dispose of one more human. We have acquired the device.
[Zygon!Kate turns to see Clara with the strap on her wrist.]
Clara Activation code, right?
[Zygon!Kate roars in frustration and anger. Clara disappears.]

* * *
[Back in the cell in 1562, Eleven is still scratching away while War Doctor continues to scan the door.]
War In theory, I can trigger an isolated sonic shift among the molecules and the door should disintegrate.
Ten [dismissively] You'd have to calculate the exact harmonic resonance of the entire structure down to a subatomic level. Even the sonic would take years.
War [giving up] No, no, the sonic would take centuries. [He sits down on a bench beside the door.] Still, we might as well get started. Help to pass the [sarcastic] timey-wimey. Do you have to talk like children? What is it that makes you so ashamed of being a grown-up? [as both Ten and Eleven look at him] Ooh, the way you both look at me, what is that? I'm trying to think of a better word than 'dread'.
Ten [bitterly] It must be really recent for you.
War Recent?
Eleven [reluctantly] The Time War. The last day. The day you killed them all.
Ten [angrily] The day WE killed them all.
Eleven Same thing.
[Ten walks away, passing Bad Wolf.]
Bad Wolf It's history for them. All decided. They think their future is real. They don't know it's still up to you.
War I don't talk about it.
Ten [scornfully] What are you talking about? There's no one else here.
Bad Wolf [to the War Doctor] Go on, ask them. Ask them what you need to know.
War [to Ten and Eleven] Did you ever count?
Eleven Count what?
War How many children there were on Gallifrey that day?
Eleven [stops carving, then speaks dismissively] I have absolutely no idea.
[Ten glares at Eleven, knowing he's lying]
War How old are you now?
Eleven Uh, I dunno, I lose track. Twelve-hundred-and-something, I think, unless I'm lying. I can't remember if I'm lying about my age - that's how old I am.
War 400 years older than me and in all that time you never even wondered how many there were. You never once counted?
Eleven Tell me, what would be the point?
Ten [grimly] 2.47 Billion.
War [astonished] You DID count!
Ten [to Eleven] You forgot! 400 years, is that all it takes?
Eleven I moved on!
Ten Where?! Where can you be now that you can forget something like that?!
Eleven Spoilers.
Ten No. No, no, no. For once, I would like to know where I’m going.
Eleven [grimly] No. You really wouldn’t.
[Ten looks almost terrified]
War I don't know who you are. Either of you. I haven't got the faintest idea.
Bad Wolf They’re you. They're what you become if you destroy Gallifrey. The man who regrets and the man who forgets. The Moment is coming. The Moment is me. You have to decide.
War [shaking his head] No.
Ten [scornfully] No?
War Just [firmly] no.
[Eleven chuckles.]
Ten [sneering] Is something funny? Did I miss a funny thing?
Eleven Sorry. It just occurred to me, this is what I'm like when I'm alone.
Bad Wolf It’s the same screwdriver. [She is standing next to Ten, who is flipping the sonic in his hand] Same software, different case.
[The War Doctor looks at his own sonic, briefly activating it.]
War [realisation] Four hundred years!
Ten [confused] Sorry?
War At a software level, they're all the same device, aren’t they? Same software, different case.
Ten [warily] Yeah?
Eleven [reaching for his own sonic] So?
War So [getting to his feet] it would take centuries for the screwdriver to calculate how to disintegrate the door. Scanning the door [he does so], implanting the calculation as a permanent subroutine in the software architecture and [turning on the others] if you really are me with your sandshoes and your dickie bow [Ten rolls his eyes] and that screwdriver is still mine, that calculation is still going on.
Ten [holds his sonic to his ear] Yeah! Still going?
Eleven [activating his sonic] Calculation complete!
Bad Wolf [smugly] Same software, different face.
Eleven 400 years in four seconds! We may have had our differences, which is frankly odd in the circumstances, but I tell you what, boys, we are incredibly clever.
[Clara bursts into the cell]
Eleven How did you do that?
Clara It wasn’t locked.
Eleven Right.
Clara [whispering, to Eleven] So they're both you then, yeah?
Eleven Yes. You've met them before. Don't you remember?
Clara A bit. [to Ten] Nice suit.
Ten [would-be casually] Thanks.
Clara Hang on, three of you in one cell and none of you thought to try the door?
War It should have been locked!
Eleven Yes, exactly. Why wasn't it locked?
Elizabeth [smugly, bursting in] Because I wanted to see what you would do upon escaping. I understand you're rather fond of this world. It's time I think you saw what's going to happen to it.

* * *
[Osgood peers through the hole in what was Elizabeth's portrait face - incidentally also fulfilling the fantasies of fangirls and -boys everywhere by appearing in a picture with the Doctor - and then makes her way down into the Under Gallery, past empty plinths that one held Zygons, surrounded by Zygon-like noises. She passes one form still beneath a sheet, which gives a huge gasp. Osgood shrieks and turns to face it before taking a closer look at its shoes. She rips off the sheet to reveal a woman beneath a layer of Zygon rubber.]
Osgood Kate! Goodness, you're not actually dead! Oh, that's tremendous news! [she begins to unravel the Zygon ropes from around Kate's arms] Those creatures, they turn themselves into copies. Maybe they need to keep the original alive, refresh the image, so to speak.
Kate [faintly] Where did it go?
Osgood I don't know! Wait, hang on, yes I do. The Tower!
Kate [breathlessly] If those creatures - have got access to the Black archive - we may just have lost control of the planet.
[Zygon rope drops to the ground]

* * *
[In 1562, an underground lair, half a dozen Zygon are working at machines.]
QE [smugly] The Zygons lost their own world. It burned in the first days of the Time War. A new home is required.
Clara So they want this one.
[Elizabeth, Clara, Ten, the War Doctor and Eleven look down on the Zygons from above]
QE Oh, no! Far too primitive. Zygons are used to a certain level of comfort.
Zygon Commander, why are these creatures here?
QE Because I say they should be! It is time you, too, were translated. [to the others] Observe this. I believe you will find it fascinating.
[The Zygon puts its hand (paw?) on a glass cube and then vanishes. A small figure appears in what had formerly been a plain landscape painting.]
Clara That's him! That's the Zygon. In the picture now!
War It's not a picture, it's stasis cube. Time Lord Art. Frozen instants in time. Bigger on the inside, but could be deployed as...
Ten [filling the gap] Suspended animation. [as Eleven points at him in agreement] Oh, that's very good! The Zygons all pop inside the pictures, wait a few centuries until the planet's a bit more interesting, and then out they come.
Eleven You see, Clara, they're stored in the paintings in the Under Gallery. Like Cup-A-Soups, except you add time, if you can picture that. Nobody can picture that. Forget I said Cup-A-Soups.
Clara Now the world is worth conquering. So the Zygons are invading the future from the past.
Eleven Exactly!
Ten [turning away to Elizabeth] And d'you know why I know that you're a fake? It's because you're such a bad copy. It's not the smell, or the unconvincing hair, or the atrocious teeth, or the eyes - just a bit too close together - or the breath that could stun a horse. It's because my Elizabeth, the real Elizabeth, would never be stupid enough to reveal her own plan. Honestly! [mocking] Why would you do that?
QE [smugly, as if to an idiot] Because it's not my plan. [angrily] And I am the real Elizabeth!
Ten [awkwardly] Okay, so, backtracking a moment to lend some context to my earlier remarks...
QE My twin is dead. [hoisting up her skirts] I am accustomed to taking precautions! [she flourishes a gold dagger, at the sight of which Ten backs away] Those Zygon creatures never considered that it was me who survived rather than their own commander. The arrogance that typifies their kind!
Clara Zygons?
QE Men. [Ten looks offended]
Clara And you actually killed one of them?
QE I may have the body of a weak and feeble woman, but at the time, so did the Zygon. The future of my kingdom is imperilled. Doctor, can I rely on your service?
Ten I'm going to need my TARDIS.
QE It has been procured already! [he looks delighted] But first, my love, you have a promise to keep!
[A wedding outside the castle walls and in front of the TARDIS as well as both other Doctors and Clara.]
Clergyman I now pronounce you man and wife.
Clara Woo hoo!
Clergyman You may kiss the bride.
[Clara throws confetti as the kiss begins. She begins to look uncomfortable when it continues.]
War Is there a lot of this in the future?
Eleven It does start to happen, yeah.
QE [when the kiss finally ends] Godspeed, my love!
Ten [apparently sincerely] I will be right back.
[He runs for the TARDIS, fishing for his key, and brushing confetti off his shoulders as he heads for the controls. He is followed by the other three.]
Eleven Right then, back to the future.
War [dismissively] You've let this place go a bit.
Eleven Ah, it’s his grunge phase. He grows out of it.
Ten [patting the TARDIS core] Don't you listen to them.
[There is a buzz and then, when Eleven touches something, the walls of the TARDIS change from coral to white circles.]
Ten The desktop is glitching!
War Three of us from different time-zones, it's trying to compensate.
Eleven [in excitement] Hey, look, the round things!
Ten [passionately] I love the round things!
Eleven What are the round things?
Ten [shakes head] No idea!
Eleven Oh, dear, the friction contrafibulator! [flicks a switch and the room changes to Eleven's TARDIS] Ah, there! Stabilised!
Ten Oh, you've redecorated! [wrinkles his nose and shakes his head] I don't like it.
Eleven [hurt] Oh! Oh, yeah. Oh, you never do. Listen, we're going to the National Gallery. The Zygons are underneath it.
Clara No! UNIT HQ. They followed us. They’re in the Black Archive. [all three Doctors turn to look at her simultaneously] Okay, so you've heard of that then.

* * *
[In the Black Archive.]
McGillop 2 [a Zygon, needless to state] The equipment here is phenomenal. The human don't realise what half this stuff does. We could conquer their world in a day.
Kate!Zygon We are fortunate, then, in our choice of duplicate.
McGillop 2 If I were human, I'd say it was Christmas.
[The door of the Archive opens. McGillop, Kate and Osgood enter.]
Kate No, I'm afraid you wouldn't. We're not armed, you may relax.
Kate!Zygon We are armed. You may not.
Kate Lock the door. I'm afraid we can't be interrupted. You don't mind if I get comfortable. [she sits down at a table facing another chair]
Kate!Zygon You don't mind if I do.
[The Zygon crosses the floor, taking on the form of Kate and then sitting opposite her. The Osgoods and McGillops take up mirrored positions behind their respective leaders.]
Kate You'll realise there are protocols protecting this place. Osgood?
Osgood In the event of alien incursion, the contents of this room are deemed so dangerous it will self-destruct in -
Kate Five minutes. [she starts a timer] There's a nuclear warhead twenty feet beneath us. Are you sitting comfortably?
Kate 2 You would destroy London?
Kate To save the world, yes I would.
Kate 2 You're bluffing!
Kate You really think so? Somewhere in your memory is a man called Brigadier Alastair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart.
[Zygon-Kate looks dismissive.]
Kate I’m his daughter.
[Zygon-Kate looks suddenly and distinctly nervous.]
Eleven [suddenly interrupting] Science leads, Kate. Is that what you meant? Is that what your father meant?
Kate Doctor!
Eleven Space-time telegraph, Kate. A gift from me to your father. Hotline straight to the TARDIS. I know about the Black Archive and I know about the security protocol. Kate, please! Tell me you are not about to do something unbelievably stupid!
Kate I’m sorry, Doctor. [to McGillop] Switch it off.
Ten [angrily] This is not a decision you will ever be able to live with!
[Ten and Eleven share a look of mutual understanding across the console. The TARDIS shudders as they try to land.]
Eleven Kate, we're trying to bring the TARDIS in. Why can't we land?
Kate [to McGillop] I said switch it off!
Eleven Kate, just listen to me!
[The telegraph is turned off.]
Ten [realising] Tower of London. Totally TARDIS-proof.
Clara Can they do that?
Eleven Alien technology plus human stupidity - trust me, it's unbeatable.
War We don't need to land!
Ten [as if to an idiot] Yeah, we do! Tiny bit! [patronising] Try and keep up.
War No we don't! We don't! There is another way.
[He crosses to the console and picks up the glass cube. Eleven's eyes widen in realisation. Ten joins them at the console, raising his eyebrows as he, too understands.]
War Cup-A-Soup. [Eleven looks momentarily thrilled at the use of his words] What is Cup-A-Soup? [Eleven deflates]

* * *
[Flashback to Eleven's first view of Gallifrey Falls]
Eleven What happened?
Kate Easier for me to show you.
[McGillop's phone rings]
McGillop McGillop!
Eleven [hanging out of the TARDIS] Take a look at your phone and confirm who you're talking to.
McGillop [does so] But - that's not possible. I was just...
Eleven You were just talking to me, I know. I'm a time-traveller. Figure it out. I need you to send the Gallifrey Falls painting to the Black Archive. Understood?
McGillop Understood, sir, but why would I take it there?

* * *
[In the Black Archive]
Kate 2 One word from you will cancel the countdown.
Kate Quite so.
Kate 2 It's keyed to your voiceprint.
Kate And mine alone.
Kate 2 [smugly] Not anymore. Cancel the detonation!
Kate Countermanded!
Kate 2 Cancel the detonation!
Kate Countermanded!
[While the world's most dangerous game of 'she said-she said' is going on, Osgood turns away from the others.]
Kate 2 We only have to agree to live.
Kate Sadly we can only agree to die.
Osgood Please, Doctor! Please save us! Please save us! Please save us...
[Over her shoulder is Gallifrey Falls. The camera zooms in, moving towards the image that previously showed the War Doctor standing alone. Now all three Doctors are in the portrait. They turn, pulling out their sonics and directing the beams to a nearby Dalek. It is forced backwards, through the picture, through the glass (shattering from the inside out) and into the Black Archive. The three Doctors follow. Clara also climbs out.]
War Hello.
Ten I'm the Doctor.
Eleven Sorry about the Dalek.
[The Dalek sparks. The Doctors glance at it before turning back.]
Clara Also the showing off.
Eleven [getting in Kate 2's face - clearly he can't tell the difference either] Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, what in the name of sanity are you doing?
Kate The countdown can only be halted at my personal command. There's nothing you can do.
Ten Except make you both agree to halt it.
Kate Not even for three of you.
War You're about to murder millions of people.
Kate To save billions. How many times have you made that calculation?
Eleven [grimly] Once. It turned me into the man I am now. [sideways glance at the War Doctor] I'm not even sure who that is anymore.
Ten You tell yourself it's justified, but it's a lie, because what I did that day was wrong. [Bad Wolf appears behind the War Doctor] Just wrong.
Eleven [triumphantly] And because I got it wrong, I'm going to make you get it right.
[Ten and Eleven pull around the two wheely chairs, sit on them, prop their feet on the desk and fold their arms across their chests.]
Kate How?
Ten Any second now, you're going to stop that countdown. Both of you. Together.
Eleven And then you're going to negotiate the most perfect treaty of all time.
[The War Doctor smiles proudly]
Ten Safeguards all round. Completely fair on both sides.
Eleven And the key to perfect negotiation -
Ten Not knowing what side you're on.
[They push back their chairs and get to their feet, getting out their sonic.]
Eleven So, for the next few hours, until we decide to let you out -
Ten No one in this room will be able to remember if they're human -
Eleven Or Zygon.
Ten Oops a daisy!
[Ten leaps onto the table, Eleven following. They aim their sonics are the memory filters, the War Doctor joining them, chuckling as he does so. The lights flash white and both Kates blink blankly before obviously realising what is happening.]
Kates Cancel the detonation!
[The clock stops with five seconds to go.]
Eleven [smugly] Peace in our time.
[Both Kates, Osgoods and McGillops take their former places. Negotiations begin.]
Osgood [seriously, don't push it!] It's funny, if I'm a Zygon then my clothes must be Zygon, too. So what happens if I lose a shoe or something?
[The other Osgood laughs a little and then chokes. The first Osgood pulls the inhaler out of her pocket. The two stare at it, realising that they can tell the difference between them. The first Osgood puts her fingers on her lips. The other one takes the inhaler and uses it. The first one smiles. Clara moves through the room, stopping in front of the boards that show the earliest companions Susan, Ian, Barbara, Vicki, Stephen, Polly, Ben and others. She passes a damaged Cyberman helmet and comes across to where the War Doctor is sitting in an arm chair, drinking a cup of tea.]
Clara Hello. [she pulls up a chair]
War Hello.
Clara I'm Clara. We haven't really met yet.
War I look forward to it. [Clara is staring intently at him.] Is there a problem?
Clara The Doctor - my... my Doctor. He's always talking about the day he did it. The day he wiped out the Time Lords to stop the war.
War One would.
Clara You wouldn’t. 'Cause you haven't done it yet. It's still in your future.
War [warily] You're very sure of yourself.
Clara He regrets it. I see it in his eyes every day. He'd do anything to change it.
War Including saving all these people. How many worlds has his regret saved, do you think? Look over there human and Zygon working together in peace. How did you know?
Clara [shyly, sympathetically] Your eyes. You're so much younger.
War Then, all things considered, its time I grew up. [to Bad Wolf, who has appeared in the doorway] I've seen all I needed. The Moment has come. I'm ready.
Bad Wolf I know you are.
Clara [confused, she turns and looks over her shoulder] Who's there? Who are you talking [she looks back] to?
[The War Doctor's chair is empty. The lid of the thermos from which he was drinking his tea is sitting on the arm of the chair.]

* * *
[On Gallifrey, the War Doctor is standing on front of an unfolded silver and gold box. A large red button protrudes from it.]
Bad Wolf Well, you wanted a big, red button. One big bang. No more Time Lords. No more Daleks. [anxiously] Are you sure?
War [firmly] I was sure when I came in here. There is no other way.
Bad Wolf You have seen the man you will become.
War Those men? Extraordinary.
Bad Wolf [half-smiling] They were you.
War [bitterly, but resigned] No. They are the Doctor.
Bad Wolf You're the Doctor, too.
War [shakes head] No. Great men are forged in fire. It is the privilege of lesser men to light the flame. [bitter, sad sigh] Whatever the cost.
[As his hand hovers over the button, flashback to children dancing around a maypole and laughing.]
Bad Wolf [desperately] You know the sound the TARDIS makes? That wheezing groaning. [his hand draws back] That sound brings hope, wherever it goes.
War Yes. Yes, I like to think it does.
Bad Wolf To anyone who hears it, Doctor. [faint sounds] Anyone, however lost. [TARDIS sounds become more clear] Even you. [she smiles]
[The War Doctor turns as two TARDISes take shape at the end of the shack. Doors open. Ten steps out of one TARDIS, Eleven and Clara out of the other. The Doctors look uncomfortable as they approach the War Doctor and the Moment.]
Clara I told you, he hasn't done it yet.
War Go away now, all of you. This is for me. [He turns back to the Moment.]
Ten These events should be time-locked. We shouldn't even be here
Eleven So something let us through.
Bad Wolf [smiling] You clever boys!
War [desperately] Go back. Go back to your lives. Go and be the Doctor that I could never be. [on the verge of tears] Make it worthwhile.
[His hand comes to rest on the button.]
Ten All those years burying you in my memory.
Eleven Pretending you didn't exist. Keeping you a secret, even from myself.
Ten Pretending you weren't the Doctor when you were the Doctor more than anybody else.
Eleven [moves up beside the War Doctor] You were the Doctor on the day it wasn’t possible to get it right.
[Flashback to the War Doctor's actions in Arcadia]
Ten [taking his place on the other side, putting his hand over the War Doctor's on the button] But this time...
Eleven You don’t have to do it alone.
War [tearfully] Thank you.
Ten What we do today is not out of fear or hatred. It is done because there is no other way.
Eleven And it is done in the name of the many lives we are failing to save.
[Clara is in tears. She shakes her head in denial. Eleven notices.]
Eleven What? What is it? What?
Clara Nothing.
Eleven No? Something. Tell me.
Clara You told me you wiped out your own people. I just - I never pictured YOU doing it, that's all.
Bad Wolf Take a closer look.
[The shack dissolves into the chaos of war. Around the three Doctors, men, women and children run and scream in terror.]
Clara What's happening?
War Nothing. It's a projection.
Bad Wolf It's the reality around you.
Clara [tearfully] These are the people you're going to burn?
Ten [in pain] There isn't anything that we can do.
Eleven [bitterly] He's right! There isn't another way, there never was! Either I destroy my own people or let the universe burn.
Clara [scornfully] Look at you. The three of you - The Warrior, The Hero... and you.
Eleven [questioningly] And what am I?
Clara [mockingly] Have you really forgotten?
Eleven [desperately] Yes, maybe, yes.
Clara We've got enough warriors. Any old idiot can be a hero.
Eleven Then what do I do?
Clara What you've always done: be a Doctor.
[The scene changes. The darkness is gone, as is the war. People come out of holes, reunite with friends and family. Still afraid, but not quite so afraid. The Doctors, however, are still surrounded by darkness.]
Clara You told me the name you chose was a promise. What was the promise?
Ten [softly] Never cruel nor cowardly.
War Never give up. Never give in.
[The Bad Wolf smiles as the projection dies, returning them to the shack. Ten and the War Doctor look warily at Eleven, who is looking at them in the same way.]
Ten You're not actually suggesting that we change our own personal history?
Eleven We change history all the time! I'm suggesting something war worse.
War [suspicious] What, exactly?
Eleven Gentlemen, I have had 400 years to think about this. [he speaks more cheerfully] I've changed my mind!
[He pulls out his sonic and aims it at the Moment. The red button sinks away.]
War [frustrated] There's still a billion billion Daleks up there, attacking!
Eleven [pointing at him] Yeah! There is. There is!
Ten [beginning to understand] But there's something those billion billion Daleks don't know.
Eleven 'Cause if they did they'd probably send for reinforcements!
Clara [eagerly] What? What don't they know?
Eleven This time there's three of us.
War Oh! [clutches his head in delight] Yes! Oh, that is good! That is brilliant!
Ten Oh! Oh! Oh, I'm getting that too! That is brilliant! [he high-fives his TARDIS]
Eleven I've been thinking about it for centuries!
War [gleefully] She didn’t just show me any old future! She told me EXACTLY the future I needed to see.
Bad Wolf [smugly] Now you're getting it.
Eleven [confused] Hey? Who did?
War Oh, Bad Wolf, I could kiss you!
Bad Wolf [dismissively] Yeah, that’s gonna happen.
Ten [shocked] Sorry, did you just say - Bad Wolf?
[Eleven looks equally shocked]
Clara So, what are we doing? What's the plan?
War The Dalek fleets are surrounding Gallifrey, firing on it constantly.
Ten Sky Trenches are holding but what if the whole planet just disappeared?
Clara Tiny bit of an ask!
Ten The Daleks would be firing on each other! They'd destroy themselves in their own cross-fire.
War Gallifrey would be gone. The Daleks would be destroyed. It would look to the rest of the universe as if they had annihilated each other.
Clara But where would Gallifrey be?
Ten [gleefully, whispering as if he has found the secret to life itself] Frozen. Frozen in an instant of time. Safe and hidden away.
Eleven Exactly.
War Like a painting.
[The three Doctors grin at her and at each other. She looks pleased, but a bit uncertain.]

* * *
[Outside, the Daleks are still firing on Gallifrey. Meanwhile, in the War Rooms.]
General [entering the map room] Another one! Are you sure the message is from him?
Androgar Oh yes!
General Why would he do that? [staring at a hologram of the message 'Gallifrey Stands'] What's the mad fool talking about now?
Eleven [suddenly appearing on a screen behind them] Hello, hello, Gallifrey High Command, this is the Doctor speaking.
Ten [on another screen] Hello! Also the Doctor, can you hear me?
War [on the middle screen] Also the Doctor. Standing ready.
General Dear God, three of them. All my worst nightmares at once.
Ten [somewhat hesitantly] General, we have a plan.
Eleven [resigned] We should point out, at this moment, it is a fairly terrible plan...
Ten And almost certainly won't work.
Eleven I was happy with 'fairly terrible'.
Ten Sorry, just thinking out loud.
Eleven We're flying our three TARDISes into your lower atmosphere.
Ten We're positioned at equidistant intervals around the globe. Equidistant...so grown up.
War [fiddling with his controls] Just about ready to do it.
General Ready to do what?
Eleven [gleefully] We're going to freeze Gallifrey.
General I'm sorry, what?
Ten Using our TARDISes, we're going to freeze Gallifrey in a single moment in Time.
War You know, like those stasis cubes? A single moment in time held in a parallel pocket universe.
Eleven Except we're going to do it to a whole planet.
Ten And all the people on it.
General [in shock] What? Even if that were possible, which it isn't, why would you do such a thing?
Eleven [grimly] Because the alternative is burning.
Ten [bitterly] And I've seen that.
Eleven [angrily] And I never want to see it again.
General We'd be... lost... in another universe. Frozen in a single moment. We'd have nothing.
Eleven You would have HOPE. And right now, that is exactly what you don't have.
General It's delusional! The calculations alone would take hundreds of years!
Eleven Oh, hundreds and hundreds! But don’t worry.
Ten I started a VERY long time ago.
[All of the Doctor's previous incarnations arrive to aid in the plan's execution]
One Calling the War Council of Gallifrey. This is the Doctor.
Eleven You might say, I've been doing this all my lives.
[Other Doctors chime in Stand by - Ready - Commencing calculations - Soon be there - Cross the boundaries that divide one universe from another - But we'll lock onto these co-ordinates]
Nine And for my next trick...
General [bitterly] I didn't know when I was well-off! All twelve of them!
Twelve No sir! All thirteen!
[The Twelfth Doctor joins the others in saving Gallifrey. The Time Lord War Council chamber shakes as the Daleks in orbit increase their fire.]
Androgar Sir, the Daleks know something is happening! They're increasing their firepower!
General [desperately] Do it, Doctor. Just do it. Do it!
Eleven [grimly] Okay. Gentlemen, we're ready. Geronimo!
Ten Allons-y!
War [frustrated by the childishness] Oh, for God's sake! Gallifrey stands!
[Thirteen TARDISes fly into the glowing ball that is Gallifrey. It flashes briefly to white, a Dalek ship is shot out of the centre, and then the screen goes white.]

[A sugar cube is dropped into a cup of tea. Three TARDISes line the walls of a room, opposite which is a white hexagonal pattern. Gallifrey Falls is hanging on a wall. A bench stands opposite, on which Clara and the War Doctor are sitting while Ten and Eleven stand in front of the picture, also drinking tea.]
War I don't suppose we'll ever know if we actually succeeded. But at worst we failed doing the right thing as opposed to succeeding doing the wrong one.
Clara Life and soul, you are.
Ten [studying the painting through his brainy specs] What is it actually called?
Eleven Well, there's some debate. Either No More or Gallifrey Falls.
War [grimly] Not very encouraging.
Ten How did it get here?
Eleven No idea. [removes his glasses]
Ten [shrugging] There's always something we don't know, isn't there?
War One should certainly hope so! [puts down his tea and stands up] Well, gentlemen, it has been an honour - and a privilege.
Ten [bowing his head] Likewise.
Eleven [warmly] Doctor.
War [acknowledging this with a smile] Well, if I grow to be half the man you are [both older Doctors look smug, but then he turns to the bench and their faces drop] Clara Oswald, I shall be happy indeed.
Clara [scornfully but smiling] That's right, aim high. [He kisses her cheek in farewell]
War [serious again] I won't remember this, will I?
Eleven The time-streams are out of sync. You can't retain it. No.
War [tersely] So I won't remember that I tried to save Gallifrey rather than burn it. I have to live with that. [he lightens a little] But for now, for this moment, I am the Doctor again. Thank you.
[Ten and Eleven smile at him and nod in agreement. The War Doctor glances at the TARDISes.]
War Now, which one's mine?
[The other two look momentarily uncertain, but the War Doctor laughs and moves to the first of the blue boxes, going inside and closing the door. It dematerialises. Inside, the War Doctor looks down at his hands, which are glowing gold, the first sign of regeneration.]
War Oh, yes. Of course! I suppose it makes sense! Wearing a bit thin. I hope the ears are a bit less conspicuous this time.
[He regenerates into the ninth Doctor.]

[Back in the Gallery, Ten takes off his glasses and turns to Eleven.]
Ten I won't remember either, so you might as well tell me.
Eleven [awkwardly] Tell you what?
Ten Where it is we're going that you don't want to talk about.
Eleven [after an uncomfortable pause] I saw Trenzalore. Where we're buried. We die in battle, among millions.
Ten [horrified] That's not how it's supposed to be.
Eleven That’s how the story ends. Nothing we can do about it. Trenzalore is where you're going.
Ten [refusing to accept it] Oh, never say nothing! [Eleven smiles] Anyway [holds out his hand] good to know my future is in safe hands. [goes over to the bench and puts down his tea] Keep a tight hold on it, Clara.
Clara [with a half-salute] On it!
[Ten kisses the back of Clara’s hand in a flirtatious manner and smirks at Eleven on the way to his own TARDIS. Eleven smiles again.]
Ten [becoming serious] Trenzalore. We need a new destination because - I don’t want to go.
[Ten’s TARDIS dematerialises]
Eleven He always says that.
[Eleven turns to look at the picture.]
Clara Need a moment alone with your painting?
Eleven How did you know?
Clara Those big, sad eyes. [kisses his cheek] I always know. Oh, by the way, there was an old man looking for you. I think it was the Curator.
[She goes into the TARDIS, leaving Eleven sitting on the bench among the teacups and looking at the image.]
Eleven I could be a curator. I'd be great at curating. I'd be The Great Curator! I could retire and do that. I could retire and be the curator of this place.
Curator You know, I really think you might.
Eleven [shocked, passionate] I never forget a face...
Curator I know you don't. And in years to come, you might find yourself revisiting a few, but just the old favourites, eh?
[The Curator smiles knowingly and Eleven winks at him.]
Curator You were curious about this painting, I think. I acquired it in remarkable circumstances. What do you make of the title?
Eleven Well, which title? There's two. No More or Gallifrey Falls.
Curator No, see, that's where everybody's wrong. It's all one title Gallifrey Falls No More. Now - what would you think that means, eh?
Eleven [excitement building] That Gallifrey didn't fall! It worked! It's still out there!
Curator I'm only a humble curator, I'm sure I wouldn't know.
Eleven [sharply] Then where is it?
Curator Where is it indeed? Lost. Shh! Perhaps. Things do get lost, you know. And now you must excuse me. Oh, you have a lot to do...
Eleven Do I? Is that what I'm supposed to do now? Go looking for Gallifrey?
Curator Well, it's entirely up to you. Your choice. I can only tell you what I would do. If I were you- [chuckling] If I were you. Perhaps I was you, of course. Or perhaps, you are me. Congratulations.
Eleven [beaming] Thank you very much! [they shake hands]
Curator Or perhaps it doesn't matter either way. Who knows, eh? [he taps his nose] Who....nose.

[Eleven walks around the console in his TARDIS towards the doors.]
Eleven Clara sometimes asks me if I dream. “Of course I dream,” I tell her. “Everybody dreams.” “But what do you dream about?” she'll ask. “The same thing everybody dreams about,” I tell her. “I dream about where I'm going.” She always laughs at that. “But you're not going anywhere. You're just wandering about.” That's not true, not anymore. I have a new destination. My journey is the same as yours, the same as anyone's. It's taken me so many years, so many lifetimes, but at last I know where I'm going, where I've always been going: Home. The long way 'round.
[He comes out of the TARDIS to join all of the other Doctors, including the War Doctor, standing looking up at Gallifrey.]

dw, day of the doctor
